BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 17th January 2022

 

Plenty of sunshine and a bright trade in all sections with 609 Cattle and 1,185 Sheep on offer.

A tremendous entry of 158 Finished Cattle maintained recent price levels with top figures 285p and £1,955 per head.  There were 65 heifers with the average at a very healthy 232p and 62 Steers looking very well sold with the average 237.7p for all comers.

OTM Cattle and Feeding Cows were out in force with a total of 130 on offer.

Top figures 196p and £1,800 with the average a solid 139 pence.

A seasonal entry of 268 Store & Breeding Cattle (bearing in mind the 790 entered for the HPLS sale on Friday) sold exceptionally well with Steers to £1,470, Heifers £1,400 and Feeding Bulls £1,100.

In the Breeding Section Cows & Calves sold to £1,270 and in calvers to £1,070.

53 Calves on offer with quality rather mixed, Bulls to £345 and Heifers £188.

Over in the Sheep shed the 820 Hoggs sold on another cracking trade with the best on offer to 348p/kg and £169.20 per head.

The SQQ average looked very respectable at 282.3p.

Finally, there were 365 Cull Sheep with Ewes to £198 to average an astonishing £123.80.

We though that they were dear last year and the report said so, but cows are dearer this year than last and actually dearer on the week as well (4 pence more than last Monday) top cow today was one of a trio from James Hodgkinson, Sterndale who sold a pure Limousin (7yrs) at 196p or £1501.  62 vendors of cows today selling to a good ring of buyers.  Competition at its finest at Bakewell.

Many more than last week and indeed last year with the overall average up 34 pence on the year and 2 pence on the week for the 56 vendors who showed cattle today and I thank each and every one for their continued support in selling quality cattle week on week in Bakewell.

Good numbers and tremendous prices again.  Suckler quality Limousin from David Goddard representing S & D Fearn rising to 270p (£1836) with his others at 265 and 240 (£1867).  A trio of big bulls topped £1900 with John Ottewell at the top of the pile at £1955 (250p) Hereford to 218p and 13 B/W sold to 205p for a Friesian.

A fantastic show of quality cattle today and an improved average although trade generally very similar.  Michael Hadfield had a super group of 5 selling to 278p or £1829.  Keith Harrop had 264p and Vernon Belfield 263p.  Big strong Limousin from John Grummett sold up to £1892 and £1862.  Longhorn to 246p, Angus to 218p and Hereford to 211p.

A bumper show of heifers and some outstanding quality in the ranks.  Super star quality peaked at 285p for a Jonathon Salisbury special.  Clive Bacon had heavyweights to 279p (£1863) and 269p (£1893) Hereford to 211p, Angus to 220p with 3 OTM clean in the mix having an effect on the averages.

A decent entry of 268 head was well received by a strong line up of buyers many of whom who had travelled considerable distances to bid for Bakewell cattle.

As a consequence, trade was outstanding with both steers and heifers averaging over £900 for the entire entry including weaned calves.

A total entry of 1185 sheep included 820 lambs with demand very brisk from start to finish.  Best shapely lambs sold to 348p/kg for best butchers lambs with heavyweight butchers lambs to 311p/kg and overweight sorts to 284p/kg.  Top gross of £169.20/head and an overall average of over £122.  The overall market average 282.33p/kg

365 Cull Sheep

A wonderful trade from start to finish and the vendors well rewarded, some having travelled many miles.

Jason Craddock topped the day at £198 and his entry of superbly shaped big pure Texels averaged £197.

Best and good were fast with Suffolk to £181, X bred Texels to £169 and Char to £168.

The top 9 pens averaged an eye watering £176.89.

Mules to over £130, but they had to be strong and meated.

Virtually no horned ewes forward and some more could have definitely been well sold.

A strong slaughter Tup trade with Texel to £159 and £124.
