BAKEWELL MARKET
Monday 31st January 2022
A solid entry of 498 cattle and 1,594 sheep met a tremendous trade in all sections and a total clearance was effected.
Such was the strength of demand that more stock could have been sold without affecting prices.
There were 297 Store & Breeding Cattle which were particularly dear with many buyers unable to fill orders. If you have store cattle and are minded to sell then, do not hesitate to give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441.
Steers peaked at £1,490, Heifers £1,400 and Feeding Bulls £1,000.
In the Breeding Cattle section Cows & Calves sold to £1,670 and £1,500 and a 4-year-old Limousin Stock Bull £2,450.
Just 96 Finished Cattle this week and a great trade. The best on offer to 298p and £1,987.
The overall average 238.4p with 43 Heifers averaging 246.0p.
78 OTM and Feeding Cows on offer with top prices 220p/kg and £1,755 per head
The overall average was an astonishing 148.6p.
Calf numbers down at only 27, but price good with Bulls £350 and Heifers £260.
In the Sheep department trade was very brisk with the 1,111 Hoggs selling to 320p/kg and £152.32 per head.
The SQQ average looked healthy at 274.4 pence.
A good turnout of 409 Cull Sheep with ewes to £196 and the average settling at £109.36.

Less on offer this week at Bakewell and indeed nationally as cows take a step up with hunger amongst the buyers at ringside.
Now is the time to sell cows to a big audience of potential buyers and achieve the maximum value for your cows, cows today sold to a fantastic 220p/kg or £1733 for a superb Limousin Cow (5yrs) from Katie Allen, Bradwell. OTM clean Lims from David Critchlow sold at 210p with Blues at 205p and 190p. Feeding Cows also up a gear today with a new buyer at ringside.

A stunning trade again and a full ring of buyers led to some fantastic results. Steven, Steff and Owen Wells topped at 294p with the best 12 also all over £1700. Angus to 256p and Hereford to 250p with an odd Friesian steer at 209p.

Even dearer than last week with a record average for a regular Monday. The Wells Family stole the day, topping the Bulls, Steers and Heifers today with just 3 cattle, well done! Their Heifer today was a shapey Blue selling at 298p to H Meakin, Quality Butchers at Leek. Keith Harrop had 290p for Blue with James Wardman and David Hadfield at 280p. Big Blues sold up to £1885 and £1865 for Clive Bacon. Angus to 238p.

A very good show of 1594 Sheep included 1111 lambs, demand very brisk throughout with best butchers lambs to 320p/kg and 9 pens selling at 310p or above. Best heavy lambs to 310p/kg with overweight to 282p/kg and top gross of £152/head.
The overall average 275p/kg which included several pens of horned lambs.

The best very fast with a top call of £196 for Jason Craddock from Lancashire.
10 pens over £165 with Michael Turner and Jason Craddock both £190 or above. The top 7 pens averaged a massive £184.14.
Best Mules over £115 with the very strongest around £120. Gritstones to close on £90/head.
Rams a fast trade with several Texels over £126 to a top of £148 for Bernard Archers and £170 for Jason Craddock, Suffolks tups to £119.
