Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 07-02-2022

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 7th February 2022

After a wet and windy weekend there were reasonable numbers of stock forward at Bakewell with 615 Cattle and 1,165 Sheep on offer.

There was a larger entry of 355 Store & Breeding Cattle, a full line up of bidders both local and long distance and a tremendous trade for all types.

Steers topped at £1,400, Heifers £1,330 and Feeding Bulls £1,080.

In the Breeding Section Cows & Calves sold to £1,430 with in calvers to £1,320.

If you have Store Cattle to sell, give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441.

There was a decent entry of Finished Cattle with 126 on total and trade remaining solid, top figures 275p/kg and £1,882 per head, the overall average looked good at 232p with the 74 Heifers at 238.7p.

OTM Cattle were a bit thin on the ground and there were only 80 in total.

Lack of supply drove demand and the trade was dearer than ever.

Top figures 217p and £1,607 with the average at an astonishing 152.1p.

If you have OTM Cattle languishing on the farm now might be the time to sell them, give Oliver a call on 07801 530899.

Calf numbers were up at 54 and calf customers will have noted some new boarding in the calf section to keep them (the calves) warmer on breezy days.

Prices were definitely a bit hotter with Bulls to £400 and Heifers £265.

In the Sheep department numbers were down following 2 days of nasty weather that would have made a fine excuse for not sorting any lambs.

We ended up with 952 Hoggs and a decent trade too.

Top figures 325p/kg and £163.20

The SQQ average was 261.9p, but it will be a few days before we know how that will compare with other outlets.

Ewe numbers down at 213, top price £165 and the average £98.23.

80 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 152.1p

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Yes, dearer again.  Up 12 pence on last week and 4 pence more this week for a similar number of cows.  The processing meat is the most wanted at present and each and every cow today exceeded expectations of the vendors.  The cows are in short supply nationally and with a slightly better milk price, the B/W’s are remaining on farms and paying their way.  Top call today was a lovely 31 mnth old Blonde Heifer from Richard Ede at 217p (£1249) with best at 187p from a Sandbach vendor.  Better sorts 170p.
