BAKEWELL MARKET

With great uncertainty on so many fronts and fuel, feed and fertiliser prices rising by the hour, we are all horrified by the events in Ukraine and want to do something to help so have decided to raise funds to send to the Disasters Emergency Committee.

Next week the Bagshaws Partners will donate £1 per head for all stock sold on the three sale days Monday, Thursday and Friday.

There will be bucket collections around the market so that farmers may make contributions if they wish.

Trade at Bakewell remained solid for the 640 Cattle and 1,497 Sheep on offer.

There were 384 head of Store & Breeding Cattle with a tremendous trade from start to finish.  Steers sold to a remarkable £1,680 with Heifers at £1,470 and Feeding Bulls £1,040.

In the Breeding Cattle Section Cows with Calves made up to £1,950 with in calvers to £1,160.

In the Finished Cattle department, there were 124 on offer with top prices 303p/kg and £1,996.

The average for the 41 Heifers was 235p/kg with the 62 Steers at 240.5p to indicate the general level of trade.

A decent section of 106 OTM and Feeding Cows which sold at levels never previously seen at Bakewell.

Top figures 220p/kg and £1,820 per head with a record average of 163.2p.

Calves scarce and dear with only 26 on offer, Bulls sold to £392 with Heifers to £340.

Turning to the Sheep, there were 1,054 Hoggs forward with the best on offer to 298p and £140.71 per head.

The SQQ average was 260.9p.

The Cull Sheep entry was 451 with Ewes to £205 to average a substantial £108.71.

MARKET STAFF TRAINING DAY

 

Last Friday saw the long-awaited staff training day which had been postponed twice due to COVID.

The Martsafe presentation was delivered by Zanna Dennis from the Livestock Auctioneers Association (LAA)

The session included information about safety and welfare for both humans and livestock with particular attention paid to understanding animal behaviour and how to minimise stress in the Market

Cows are certainly at hot ticket at present with prices today beyond all expectations.  I full accept that the cattle are dearer everywhere, but surely the trade at Bakewell has to be one of the best in the Country.  9 Cows today topped £2/kg with a pure Blonde at 220p for CW Shenton, Handforth.  22 Cows over 180p, Angus to 175p and Hereford to 168p.

62 Steers – overall average 240.5p

A bumper show of Steers this week that outnumbered the heifers and some well-bred and fed cattle in the offering.  14 best sorts sold over 260p and a stunner from John Grummett topped at 280p and all the best sorts over £1800.  Angus to 266p, Hereford to 238p and even Friesian Steers in the entry today that are in the average.

A very good entry of 1509 Sheep included 2 Spring lambs and 1054 Old Season Lambs.  Demand for meated sorts still very brisk with best lighter weights to 294p/kg, best butchers lambs to 298p/kg, heavy weight butchers lambs to 293p/kg.  The overweight lambs were a better trade this week to 256p/kg and top gross of £141/head.  Overall market average 260.99p/kg which included several lots of horned lambs.

A very good show of 453 Cull Sheep saw prices for all types very brisk.  Best Texels in short supply, but demand still outstanding to peak at £205/head.  Heavy Mule ewes sold in the £115 – £130 bracket with meated horned ewes in the £70 – £90 bracket.
