Bakewell Market Report 30-11-2020

Bakewell Market Report

Monday 30th   November

Another busy day at Bakewell with 731 Cattle and 1,387 Sheep on offer.  The drop & Go system is still in place and despite the number of animals traded the number of people on the premises was remarkably small.

It looks as though this regime will have to remain in place for the foreseeable future to reduce risk and we hope this will allow the market to continue to operate.

Store Cattle numbers are still holding up with 408 forward and trade solid despite a good many weathered cattle in the entry.

Steers reached a remarkable £1,360 with heifers to £1,140 and feeding bulls £950.

In the Breeding Cattle section demand for the few cows with calves was strong with outfits at £1,500 and £1,480.

Finished Cattle were out in force with 146 forward.  Top figures 262 pence and £1,861.

The 84 heifers averaged 207.7 pence a good indication of the level of trade.

There was also a useful turnout of OTM Cattle & Feeding Cows.  Top prices 172p and £1,360 and a decent average at 118.1 pence.

Calf numbers similar at 62 with Bulls to £300 and Heifers £170.

In the sheep section prices have jumped again with the best of the 1,156 lambs making 248p/kg and £122.30 per head.

The SQQ average emerged at 217.6 pence well ahead of last year’s trade.

Only 327 Cull Sheep with trade lifting accordingly, ewes sold to £154 to average a pleasing £88.22

Another excellent entry of 408 Store & Breeding Cattle, approximately double the number at the equivalent market in 2019.

£1,480 Hfd x Cow, 68 mnths & Bull Calf RW Radford, Longnor

A strong trade from start to finish with all types wanted.  Plenty of interest in the suckled calves and younger cattle.

At the top end – very keen competition for the short finish types.  Angus & Hereford crosses selling well.  Very few black & Whites this week, but those that were forward made their money.
