Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 21-03-2022

Good numbers of stock forward with 833 Cattle and 1,498 Sheep on offer.

Trade solid in all departments, but much talk about increased costs and what the future might hold.

The Store & Breeding Cattle department was particularly busy with a total of 584 cattle on offer.

Plenty of buying power in operation and whilst purchasers were trying to spend less, demand was such that they did not succeed and prices were as good as ever.

Steers sold to £1,560, Heifers £1,480 and Feeding Bulls £1,300.

122 Finished Cattle with trade very strong.  Top figures 310p/kg and £2,046 per head.

The 54 Heifers averaged 257.1p which demonstrates the level of prices.

101 OTM and Feeding Cows on offer, a few less than we have been having and perhaps an indication that supplies are short.  Top figures 218p and £2,050 per head.

The average was a tremendous 163.9p.

Only 26 Calves with Bulls to £260 and Heifers £242.

In the Sheep section there were just 7 Spring Lambs selling to 348p/kg and £135.72 the average at 344.5p.

1071 Hoggs with supplies dwindling.  Top figures 311p/kg and £141.40 per head.

The SQQ a shade easier at 263p which indicated the higher proportion of hill bred lambs.

Cull Sheep numbers keeping up with 416 on offer.  Ewes sold to £218 to average a remarkable £122.68.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A bumper crop this week with a grand total of 584 head on offer.

Buyers out in force and trade good at all price levels.

Rather more young cattle in this week’s sample, but with the smell of grass in their nostrils buyers dug deep to secure stock.

At the other end of the spectrum the short finish cattle remain very dear with plenty of competition despite the prospect of increased feed costs.

Only the one Cow & Calf, an Angus, 54 mnths with Hfr Calf from JL Foster of Selston which made £1,440.

We seem to be attracting a few grazing/feeding cows and there were 9 to choose from all selling well.

Sample Prices:

£1010 Lim x 42 mnths FT Bagnall, Longnor
£990 Parth x 81 mnths Mrs BA Williamson, Wheatcroft
£1080 B Blue x 46 mnths T Brooks, Rolleston on Dove
£1020 Sim x 155 mnths T Brooks, Rolleston on Dove

A good selection and a decent average bearing in mind the increased number of young cattle in the entry.

Outliers commanding a considerate premium as buyers seek cattle for immediate turnout.
