BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 11th April 2022

 

Almost a full house with 877 Cattle and 1,574 Sheep on offer for the last Monday market before the Easter Holiday.

The sheep department was particularly busy with substantial entries in all sections and of course the traditional Easter Lamb Show, full details of which can be found later in this report.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section was well supported with a total of 546 head on offer.  Trade remains very firm and Steers reached £1,590, Heifers £1,495 and Feeding Bulls £1,260.

In the Breeding Section Cows & Calves topped at £1,800.

Finished Cattle were out in force with 149 forward and trade still good.

Both Steers and Heifers hit the 300p mark and the top gross price was £2,027.

The average for the 67 Heifers was 248.9p and the average gross price was a remarkable £1,450.

Many more Bulls about this week with 43 on offer selling to 280p and £1,906 per head.

Recent high levels of trade have found some OTM cattle and there was a decent entry of 157 forward.

Top figures 228p and £1,957 per head.  The average a very respectable 171.4p.

Just 25 Calves this week, but well sold with bulls to £485 and Heifers to £265.

In the Sheep section there was an excellent entry of 208 Spring lambs.

Top prices 542p and £230.35 for the show winners.

The overall SQQ average looked good at 330.8 pence.

The 898 Old Season Lambs – Hoggs reached top figures of 339p and £163.84 per head with SQQ average at 271p. Rather more Cull Sheep about with a total of 457 on offer.  Ewes sold to £162 to average a tremendous £129.80.

The price remains high and although they were a little less than last weeks record prices, there were still very, very dear.  17 cows today topped £2/kilo with a top call of 228p twice for pure Limousin cows from Messrs Green and Maier.  Plenty of meated cows 190p plus and very little in the coloured cows under 150p.

Similar numbers to last week, but less an average.  Please don’t think that the cattle are any less money today because they are not.  Last week we had a fantastic show of quality meat in the market but today these were a lot more store types about, hence reducing the overall average.  43 Bulls and 107 clean today from 53 vendors creating 22 different accounts.

Just 12 Continental, Hereford and 30 Black & White Dairy Bulls on offer.  First continental into the ring topped the sale at 280p for a storming Limousin from Mark Ludlam, Moorwood Moor selling to a Manchester wholesaler with two other beef bred continentals in the 270p’s.

17 Continental, 15 Native and 7 B/W’s.  Meat certainly at a premium with the best-bred continentals selling up to 300p/kilo for suckler bred sorts from Michael Wynne with all other posh cattle over 280p including a super big blue selling at £2027 (284p) for Stuart Wainwright.  Hereford sold to 225p, Angus to 256p, Lincoln to 225p and B/W to 225p for a Friesian.

In the Old Season Lambs a total of 898 on offer included a large proportion of heavy and overweight sorts, but demand for meated sorts very good regardless of weight.  Best heavy butchers lambs peaked at 339p/kg and £163.84/head.  Overall average 271.01p/kg.
