A very busy day at Bakewell with 964 Cattle and 1,479 Sheep on offer.

The exceptional entry was a consequence of last week’s Bank Holiday and the fact that next week is also a Bank Holiday, although in accordance with tradition Bakewell Market will operate as normal on May Day, Monday 2^nd May.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section attracted at total entry of 595 head with a tremendous trade right through the sale.

Steers reached an outstanding £1,730 with Heifers £1,600 and Feeding Bulls £1,190.

In the Breeding Section Cows & Calves peaked at £1,760 with in calf Heifers to £1,320.

The Finished Cattle Section was well supported with a total of 168 animals and a solid trade prevailed throughout.  Top figures 300p and £2,145.

As an indicator of the level of price the 56 heifers averaged 251.1p.

The OTM department attracted 149 cattle with the auctioneer reporting that trade was the dearest ever seen.

Top figures 248p and £2,128 with the average at a record breaking 185.2p.

52 Calves this week with Bulls to £490 and Heifers £265.

In the Sheep Section Spring lambs in short supply with only 55 on offer selling to 438p and £177.75 per head.  SQQ ave 375.2p.

Not a bad turnout of 848 Old Season Lambs (hoggs) peaking at 332p and £157.94 per head.  The SQQ average was 288.2p.

A much larger entry of 572 Cull Sheep saw ewes to £226 to average £134.08.

BIG ENTRY AND MEGA MONEY!

A fantastic entry of 149 cows today from 74 vendors all coming to Bakewell to enjoy the trade that we experience week on week.  Cows are very dear at present and while the price is so high the only way to achieve the best price is to sell them on their legs in Bakewell Livestock Market.

43 Cows today topped £2 kilo including 2 dairy cows with a super Lim heifer (35 mnths) at the top of the pile at 248p from Jonathon Salisbury with another heifer at 237p for Messrs Rowlinson, Denstone. Top cow was from Mark Shenton a Blonde x cow at 231p (£1709).  Top gross today was a big blue cow from R Vaughan at £2128 (224p).

A massive show of finished cattle today and some exceptional cattle amongst the offering and as always, some B/W’s and Natives that all found suitors at Bakewell.  Bulls particularly dear today.

Wow! What a trade, as dear as we have ever seen them and a new high price of 294p twice for pure Limousin from Roy Mycock and Blonde x Bulls from Claire Potter, Bonsall.  8 best over 260p, Holst sold to 216p or £1593 for Neil Massey, Spondon

56 Steers – overall average 243.5p

A big turnout and some super quality at the top end.  Suckler bred Limousin topped at 290p for James and George Blackshaw, Bakewell with all the best sorts over 270p.  A big blue from Keith Harrop topped the gross at £2145 (273p).  11 Angus to 260p, 4 Hereford to 250p and 4 B/W to 219p.

76 Heifers – overall average 251.12p/kg

A big turnout of quality this week and some good prices, particularly for the middle and bottom end.  Best butchers heifers sold to £3/kilo for a Limmy from Paul Hazledine, Watnall and selling to Wayne on behalf of H Meakin, Quality Butchers in Leek, Staffs.  Best 8 over 280p and 20 over 270p including Angus at 275p.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A very healthy entry of 595 head ensured that there was something for everybody.  Buyers were out in force and trade was well up to expectations with no sign of the fuel, feed and fert prices dampening anyone’s enthusiasm to buy stock.

The sale commenced with 58 Breeding Cattle which resulted in the following highlights:

Great trade for all sorts and sizes as the average shows bearing in mind the large numbers of younger smaller cattle in this week’s selection.

Angus cross very well sold and Black & White looking very dear.

Top honours to the continental crosses with an astounding top price of £1,730 for the best of the day.

A good selection which attracted fierce bidding at all price levels.

Angus crosses very popular and ‘hardened off’ for immediate grazing commanding a considerable premium.

A good post-holiday entry and all sections a fast trade.

Best long meated Texels probably went a little dearer later in the day with 7 vendors £199 and above to a top of £226/head for Jackie Trueman.

Best strong Suffolk x ewes towards £160 with the biggest of the Mules over £135.  Best Lonks and horned around £101 with plenty of bidders for the plain sorts.

The top 9 pens averaged a massive £211 with the total entry levelling at £134.08.

Slaughter rams a good trade with Texels at £153 three times and others to £147.
