Another full house with a total of 917 Cattle and 1,295 Sheep and a solid trade reported in all departments.

 

A bumper crop of store cattle with a total of 565 on offer together with 17 breeding cattle drew a large gathering of purchasers from both far and near and an excellent trade for all types with top prices for both steers and heifers of £1460.

 

Finished cattle numbers out in force with a total of 188 and trade brisk throughout with heifers to 308p/kg and steers to 295p/kg and a top price of £1989 per head.

 

Cull cow numbers similar to last week and again trade strong to a top of 238p/kg and £1989 per head.

 

In the sheep department Spring lamb numbers continue to increase with 278 on offer and trade remaining well in line to average 332p/kg and a top price of 372p/kg, whilst Hoggs start to dry up with 536 forward to average 270p/kg.

 

Cull ewe numbers very similar to recent weeks at 478 and trade again strong to a top of £184 per head.

 

Calves also well sold with best bulls to £450 and heifers to £370.

A better show of cows this week from 57 vendors to a full line up of 16 buyers at ringside.  Generally, the cows were a little easier this week with the average back 5 pence/kilo but the average gross price of £1221 was identical to last week.  Best cows still comfortably over 200p and selling to a high of 238p for a 30 mnth heifer from Marcus Bristow, Sleaford with best cows to 222p twice for Blondes and Limousin from Mark Sweetmore, Sterndale grossing up to £1989.  16 best over £2

Even though we had 72 last week on the Bank Holiday we had an amazing entry of 36 Bulls, 57 Steers and 95 Heifers from 60 vendors and selling to a full line up of 23 different accounts.

 

36 Finished Bulls ave 225.64p

Smart Bulls a real price with the best 3 all suckler bred bulls over 290p and up to 296p for a pure Limousin from Roy Mycock, Buxton with his other at 292p and Jo Radford also at 290p for his Blue x Char Bull.  Big boys topped at 266p grossing up to £2292 for the Edge Family, Minninglow.

Good numbers of steers today including 21 Natives and 2 B/W.  Suckler bred continentals topped the day at 295p or £1929 for Richard Shaw, Stanley with handy weight sorts from Simon Shaw Browne at 283p.  Angus to 270p, Hereford to 250p, W Black to 229p and Lincoln to 224p with 2 B/W up to 207p.

The small stores saw very active bidding and looked a fast trade particularly for Shorthorn and other natives.

Best continental plums very easy to sell with several purchasers leaving without fully filling their orders.

Middle types 19-21 mnths a little harder to sell as some purchasers take note of very dear purchased concentrate prices and other input costs. Yet again close to finished cattle a good solid trade throughout.

In the cull sheep a total of 478 on offer still very much in demand with best cutting ewes peaking at £184/head with 15 pens over £160/head.  Best Mule ewes sold in the £115-£130 head, Texel to £184, Suffolks in the £125 – £150 bracket with best meated horned ewes to £100.
