Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2022-05-23

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 23rd   May 2022

Despite many farmers hard at work with grass harvesting there were decent entries of stock at Bakewell with 747 Cattle and 869 Sheep on offer.  Trade remained good in all sections and every animal changed hands.

For the avoidance of doubt Monday markets are unaffected by the Jubilee Bank Holiday with the only change to normal being No sheep Market on Thursday 2nd June.

There were 441 Store & Breeding Cattle and plenty of buying power in operation.

Both Steers and Heifers topped at £1,400 with Feeding Bulls to £1,500.

In the Breeding Section Cow & Calf outfits reached £1,990 and Limousin Stock Bulls £2,900 and £2,500.

There was a good number of Finished Cattle with 153 in total and a wonderful trade from start to finish,

Top figures 308 pence per kilo and £2,000.96 per head.

To give an indication of the level of the strength of demand the 82 heifers averaged 258p and £1,542 per head.

Trade was also outstanding for the 113 OTM and Feeding Cattle.  Top prices 233p and £1,948 per head.

The average remained much as last week at 180.6p

A total of 40 Calves were on offer with bulls to £395 and heifers £245.

In the sheep section numbers of Spring lambs are gathering momentum with 298 this week.  The best on offer sold at 388p and the gross price of £167.08.

The all important SQQ average was 342p.

Hoggs (Old Season Lambs) are drying up fast with only 251 forward.  The best on offer hit 300p and £165.60 with the SQQ average at 269.8p.

In the Cull Sheep department there 320 on offer.  Ewes sold to £191 to average £127.17.

WCPGW

What could possibly go wrong

The joint Derbyshire NFU/Bagshaws “safety social” evening went very well with a good attendance despite many farmers being on silage duty.

The talk on subjects ranging from the danger of Slurry Gas and the safe handling of ATV’s gave everyone something to think about when they returned to the farm.

Refreshments in the form of Liz Kemps Hog Roast, The Bagshaws Ladies Cake Stall and the delicious assortment of cheese from Pike Hall ensured that there was no lack of concentration due to hunger.

Donations were gathered for the Air Ambulance to the tune of £550.

All in all, an enjoyable event, but with a very serious message.

Before you start a task think, WCPGW – What Could Possibly Go Wrong! – Could I do this more safely?

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

Another good entry of 441 Store & Breeding cattle sold on a great trade from start to finish.

The smaller cattle looked particularly dear.  At the other end of the age range there are clearly concerns about feed costs, although those currently selling finished animals are enjoying an exceptional trade.

The sale commenced with some 42 Breeding Cattle with results as follows:

£1780 Lim c Cow, 40 mnths & Bull Calf Riley Farms, Burnley
£1660 Lim x Cow, 47 mnths & Bull Calf Riley Farms, Burnley
£1420 Lim x Cow, 46 mnths & Hfr Calf Riley Farms, Burnley

£1160 Lim x 18 mnths DAW Clarke, Walsall
£680 Hfd 12 mnths SM Fletcher, Heathcote

 238 Steers ave £862

A solid trade for the mixed varieties on sale.  A good number of young cattle from weaned calves upwards sold very well indeed.

Stronger cattle making their money, but buyers clearly conscious of increased feed costs.

Distinct premium for well-matched bunched as buyers struggle to assemble a load and justify haulage costs.
