Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 30-05-2022

 BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 30th   May 2022

Decent entries for the Jubilee week market with 605 cattle and 1,204 sheep on parade.

For the avoidance of doubt there is no Thursday Lunchtime Sheep Sale on 2nd June, but the Monday Market on 6th June will take place as normal.

The only other item of news is that the Store Cattle list will close at 12 noon on Wednesday 1st June, so please let us know what you want to bring.

Trade has been outstanding again with all sections good and some departments most notably the OTM cattle exceptional.

The Store & Breeding cattle saw numbers starting to reduce with 377 forward.

A very mixed bag of cattle, but all well sold.  Steers reached £1,350, Heifers £1,520, Cows & Calves to £1,500 and Lim Stock Bulls to £2,900.

A good show of Finished cattle with a total of 127.  Top figures 301p/kg and £2,160.

The average for the 62 heifers was 241.3p which gives a good indication of price levels.

There was a shortage of OTM cattle with only 69 on offer.  Top figures 234p and £1,843.  The average was a remarkable 189.2p.

Only 32 Calves today, but a decent demand and Bulls to £410 and Heifers to £255.

More numbers in the sheep section with Spring lambs out in force with 454 on offer. Top figures 378p and £169.90 per head.

The average gross price of a 39-45kg lamb was £132.33 which puts things into context.  The SQQ average was 352.0p.

The supply of Hoggs (OSLs) is drying up fast with only 284 on offer this week.

They were a rather mixed assortment selling to 326p/kg and £187.60 with the SQQ average 257.3p.

A large entry of 466 Cull sheep included ewes to £194 to average £134.34.
