BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 4th July 2022

 

Decent entries of stock in all sections with 581 Cattle and 1,818 Sheep on offer.

Buyers out in force and trade remains solid for both sheep and cattle.

There were 307 head in the Store & Breeding Cattle department with prices well up to expectations and good many highlights through the sale.

Steers sold to £1,520, Heifers £1,260 and Feeding Bulls £1,160.

In the Breeding Section a 75 mnth old Limousin Stock Bull made £2,350 and Cows & Calves topped £2,300.

Finished Cattle numbers holding up well with 120 forward.

Top figures 291p and £1,971.

Steers averaged 252.3p and £1,611 per head.

Heifers averaged 246.6p and £1,408 per head.

In the OTM and Feeding Cow department there were exactly 100 animals on offer.

Top prices 241p and £1,845 per head, the average looked good too at 184.3 pence.

Not a bad show of calves and plenty of demand.  Bulls sold to £438 and Heifers £340.

Over in the Sheep shed there was plenty going on with 992 lambs on offer.  Top prices 329p/kg and £167.70 per head.

The SQQ average was 307.1 pence and to put things in to context the average price per head of lambs in the 39-45 kg bracket was £128.13.

Cull sheep were out in force with 655 forward.

Ewes sold to £192 to average £118.57.

100 Barren, OTM and Feeding Cows Overall Average 184.4p or £1194.87

A few more again but the average back about 5 pence on the week, not necessarily the best but some of the B/W looked less.  32 best cows still topped £2/kilo and would be no less money.  Prices peaked at 241p for a 1 calf Blonde x from Ian Spendlove with 1 calf Lims from Ruben Swift at 232p.  Old cows sold up to 230p for a 5-year-old feeding Limousin with big old Stabilizers (10yrs) at £1852 (204p).

A solid price and some very good cattle on offer.  John Grummett and Michael Hadfield both sold well bred and fed Limousin at 290p with the top 13 over 270p and the top 6 over £1900.  Herefords to 227p and Angus to 260p.

A very good price, but 6 small Devons (370-400kg) had their effect on the average.  Best heifers easy to sell with the best up to 291p and the top 11 over 272p (All Lims) with big heifers all topping £1700.

Some very good continentals forward today from several vendors who were well rewarded with a fast trade from start to finish.

Plenty of bidders for every category with Friesian Bulls topping at £142 for the Fotherby’s.  Montbeliarde Bulls to £172 for the Waltons and a top call of the day was £438 for Geoff Walton, Rising Sun with a 25-day old Blue Bull.

Generally, the second quality continental heifers looked hardest to sell but best good saw plenty of bidding.

In the reared section Messrs Thornhill at Great Longstone received up to £212 for 16-week-old Friesian Bulls.

A very good show of 1818 sheep included 992 New Season lambs.  Demand very good throughout with trade holding right to the very end.  Best butchers lambs peaked at 329p/kg with heavy sorts to 316p/kg with a top gross of £167.70/head.  The overall average 307.14p/kg.

Old Season Lambs

Still 166 Old Season lambs on offer saw demand as good as ever to peak at 304p/kg to average 231.99p/kg and to gross £150/head.

 

655 Cull Sheep

An excellent entry of 655 cull ewes and rams on offer pre the festival with all buyers bidding very briskly for all types and even got grazing buyers in attendance.

Best Texels peaked at £192/head with the top 10 pens averaging £171/head. Heavy Mules sold in the £130-£140 bracket with the best meated horned ewes in the £85-£100/head range.
