Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 22-08-2022

BAKEWELL MARKET

Monday 22nd  August 2022

A particularly busy day with 704 cattle and 1,737 sheep and farmers clearly aware that next week it is Hope Show and Bank Holiday Monday and Bakewell Market on Tuesday.

The store & breeding cattle section was well supported with a total of 381 head on offer.

Buyers were out in force and several who have clearly been on harvest duties returned to the fold this week and made their presence felt.

Trade was outstanding with many commenting that cattle were dearer than they have been for several months.

Steers reached £1,600 to average £1,002, heifers made up to £1,440 and feeding bulls £1,220.

In the breeding section cows & calves reached £2,000 and in calvers reached £1,500.

There were 137 in the finished cattle section and again trade was very strong.

Top figures 320p and £2,006 per head.

The 57 heifers averaged 247.8p, grossed up to £1,916.88 and averaged £1,465.

A good turnout of 119 OTM cattle saw the best on offer to 236p and £2,000 per head.

Another phenomenal trade with the average at 173.9 pence and £1,133 per head.

Rather more calves on offer with a total of 67 on sale.  Bulls to £450 and heifers £250.

In the sheep department there were 1,262 lambs forward and a good trade throughout.  Top prices 283p/kg and £148.85 per head.  Once again it was lambs in the heavier category that averaged more per kilo.

The SQQ average emerged at 235.0p

There was an influx of cull sheep with 486 in total.

Ewes sold to £175 to average £102.56.
