Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 05-09-2022

BAKEWELL MARKET REPORT

MONDAY 5TH SEPTEMBER

Puddles have been spotted in Derbyshire for the first time in what seems like months and the forecast indicates more to come.

A catch-up market after the Bank Holiday week with 818 cattle and 2,013 sheep on offer

All regular buyers operating and trade good in all sections.

The store and breeding cattle departments was well supported with 473 head on offer including plenty of strong short finish types which sold exceptionally well.

Steers peaked at £,1640 to average £1,065 which gives some indication of the strength of trade.

Heifers topped at £1,590 to average £814, feeding bulls sold to £900.

If you have store cattle to sell and need any advice, give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441.  We are very happy to promote any special entries with advance notice and photographs.

A good turnout of finished cattle with 125 in total.

Top figures 308p and £2,100.  The average for the 48 heifers was 246.1p and for the 49 steers 240.7p.

In gross terms heifers averaged £1,435 and steers £1,492.

There were 126 Cull and OTM cattle selling to top figures of 234p and £2,180.

The average was 174.8p/kg and £1,134 per head.

A bumper crop of 94 calves had bulls to £380 and heifers £350.

Things were busy in the sheep department with 1,455 lambs forward, quite a surprise with many producers tied up with the 6-day rule after last Friday’s sale.

Finished lambs peaked at 269p and £140 per head with the SQQ at 230p.

The cull sheep section accommodated 558 head with ewes to £173 to average £78.82.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A total of 473 cattle forward in this section with trade solid from start to finish.

Younger cattle harder to sell with buyers clearly taking into consideration the costs for the next 12 months with no realistic view of what the finished trade might be next year.
