Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

MONDAY 12^th SEPTEMBER 2022

An exceedingly busy market with 982 cattle and 1,807 sheep on offer consigned by 284 vendors.  Numbers possibly boosted by uncertainty about next week.

To clarify the matter, Bagshaws have taken the decision to close the market on Monday 19^th September the days of the Queen’s funeral as a mark of respect.  There will, however, be a market on Tuesday 20^th September and because of the short notice, it is hoped that there will be reasonable entries at the Tuesday market.

There was a bumper entry of 573 store & breeding cattle with a string trade from start to finish.  The stronger cattle were in particular demand with superb results for both individuals and bunches.

Steers reached £1640 to average £1038, despite the entry including a proportion of reared calves.  Heifers topped at £1,500 and feeding bulls £1,200.

There were 173 finished cattle forward and a solid trade throughout.  Top figures 316p/kg and £2,053 per head.

The 46 steers averaged 249.1p and the 79 heifers 237.3p indicating the level of prices.

Vendors clearly anxious to avoid passengers for the winter were off loading OTM cattle because there were 157 on sale, despite the numbers trade was strong with top figures 236p and £2,116 with the average 174.0p much the same as we have seen for several weeks.

76 calves this week and obviously wanted with bulls to £420 and heifers £300.

In the sheep section there were 1,226 lambs with top figures 258p and £132 per head.  The SQQ average was respectable 234.3p.

In the cull sheep department there was a substantial entry of 581 with ewes to £179 and the average £88.95.

A massive show of cows this week and a full line up of buyers all in a fighting mood and looking to secure a full load.  Top call today was a pure Limousin from the Clark Family at Ringinglow at 236p and selling for feeding.  Messrs Richardson, Yeaveley had 234p to gross £2040 for a Longhorn x Blue.  34 cows today over £2 with plenty more in the 180-190’s.

A massive show of 51 bulls, 46 steers and 79 heifers and a marvellous trade throughout.

51 Young Bulls ave 217.7p

The biggest numbers for as long as I can remember.  11 best topped 240p with a high of 260p for a smart Blonde x from CA Potter, Bonsall.  Angus to 237p with B/W to 213p.

A bumper crop and a fantastic price, particularly for the best.  Michael Hadfield had 316p and 302p for posh lims, with Messrs Brentnall and Richard Lea also at 300p with a trio of big boys topping £2000.  Hereford to 230p and Angus to 234p.

Massive numbers again with the best 3 over £3 topping at 309 for Tom Gratton, Riber, a fabulous show heifer that grossed £1940.  Nigel Birch and Keith Harrop both had £3 with plenty more 280-292p.  18 Hereford and Angus to 240p.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A total of 573 cattle in this department with plenty of buying power operating and some excellent results achieved.  Younger cattle well bid for, but buyers somewhat circumspect.  Short finish strong cattle a very good trade as the results will demonstrate.

Breeding Cattle comprised only 2 in calf Saler heifers from A Harrison of Bradwell at £1,000 and £980.

There was also a 33 mnth Hereford Stock Bull which made £1,300.

Feeding Bulls

Comprising:

325 Steers ave £1,038.00

A massive entry with a varied selection.

A number of weaned calves to start the proceedings attracted plenty of interest.

Strong cattle very dear and Angus & Herefords making their money.

The sale started with several lots of Angus x weanlings which made their money.

Younger cattle generally harder to sell than the stronger sorts unless they were best quality.

Plenty of interest in the stronger animals with Angus heifers in particular demand.

Another selective calf trade with the better end attracting significant interest, but the also rans selling at discounted rates and a number looking to offer value for money.

Best bulls saw B Blues to £420 and £390 with B Blue heifers to £300.

Black & Whites back a bit on last week, but still attracting interest.

A total of 1806 head of sheep included 1225 lambs.  Stronger meated sorts remain a good trade selling in the 235-250p/kg bracket with best butchers lambs up to 258p/kg.  Overall average 235.15p/kg.

A very good entry of 581 cull ewes and rams included several runs of plain grazing types with buyers for all commodities.  Demand very brisk from start to finish with best Texels to £179, heavy Suffolk x in the £145 – £155 bracket with best Mules in the £100-£125 bracket.
