Bakewell Market Report 26-09-2022

MONDAY 26TH SEPTEMBER 2022

 

A full house with large entries of stock for the week following the Queen’s funeral.

Entries of 933 cattle and 2,285 sheep were matched by a full line up of buyers and all sections reported a decent trade.

 

The Store & Breeding cattle section mustered 545 head and the entries were capped early Friday morning with further bookings made for Monday 3rd October.

The large entry attracted buyers from far and near and the strong cattle in particular were very dear.  Steers sold to £1,590, heifers £1,550 and feeding bulls £1,260.

In the breeding section cows and calves reached £1,520.  There are already several lots of breeding cattle entered for next Monday.

 

There was another excellent entry of 178 finished cattle with top figures 311p and £2,006 per head.

The 77 heifers averaged 241.1p and the 56 steers 240.2p.

 

A good turnout of 146 OTM and feeding cows with top figures 238p and £1,995 per head.

The overall average remains pretty steady at 174.2p.

 

Another good entry of 64 calves saw quality in demand with bulls to £420 and heifers £240.

 

In the sheep department there were 1,447 lambs on offer with top figures to 269p/kilo and £148.35 per head.

The SQQ looked respectable at 232.5p, but time will tell as ever with a Monday market.

A very large entry of 825 cull sheep saw ewes to £183 to average £86.14.

Another week, another big entry of barren cows about with an overall average very similar to what we have seen for the last month.  Some very good cows on offer today, but a lot of cows showing the effects of a long dry summer and now cold wet nights.  30 cows today topped £2/kilo and sold to a high of 238p for a pure Limousin cow (1 calf), 32 mnths from Steven Mills, Redmires.  69 vendors of cows today from a wide radius sold cows in Bakewell.  Please keep the numbers coming as we move through the Autumn.

Another staggering entry of 178 cattle from 63 vendors and selling to a packed ring of buyers who today coveted 25 different accounts.  The last vendor in the ring still had 13 buyers ringside with cattle possibly dearer at the end.

 

45 Young Bulls ave 219.2p

A very mixed sample today with the best 6 bulls over 250p but some very plain Holsteins also finding their way in to the averages.  Top call today was 255p for a posh well fed Blonde from Mark & Chris Shenton who had others at 254 and 250p (£1916).  A big posh Limousin from Steven Mills sold at 251p to gross a remarkable £2253.  10 Friesian averaged 212p up to 221p for Peter Furness with 7 Holstein up to 215p for Doug Leadbetter.

A big run of clean today with 56 steers that included 25 natives and 31 continentals.  Continentals as always ring the bells and sold to a high of 294p twice for a strong Blue from Clive Bacon, Wadshelf and a handy weight 510kg posh Limousin from Jonathan Hall, Longnor.  Angus sold to 268p and Hereford to 250p.

A massive show of heifers today with 29 natives and 48 continentals.  One of the last vendors in the ring claimed the top price of 311p/kg for one of 5 good heifers from Stan & Geoff Evans, Edwinstowe, who also had others at 292 and 290p (£2001).  James Wardman also had a good day with heifers at 304p (£1878) and 296p (£2006).  Hereford to 253p and Angus to 250p.

Trade much as a fortnight ago with strong short keep cattle attracting very fierce competition with long term animals harder to place if less than best quality.

Nevertheless, a solid trade prevailed from start to finish.

A total entry of 2285 sheep on offer this week included 1460 lambs.  Meated sorts still very much in demand regardless of weight, with the best lighter weight lambs to 269p/kg with best heavy butchers lambs to 268p/kg and overweight lambs to 238p/kg with a top gross price of £148.35/head.

The overall market average 233.24p/kg.

825 Cull Sheep

A tremendous entry of 825 cull ewes and rams with everyone clearing out before the next breeding ewe sale.  Best pedigree Texels peaked at £183/head for a pen of 8 from Mellor with a total of 7 pens over £164/head which included a double pen of 14 ewes selling at £164/head.  Best Suffolk x sold in the £125-£148 range with Mules in the £90-£128 range.
