Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 03-10-2022

MONDAY 3RD OCTOBER 2022

Stock still coming forward in substantial numbers with 902 cattle and 2,087 sheep on offer.

Trade remaining firm with plenty of highlights for the best.

The Store & Breeding Cattle section had a ‘capped’ entry of 586 animals with a few carried over for next Monday.

Once again Bakewell vendors enjoyed a tremendous trade for store cattle both young and old.

Steers reached the astonishing price of £1,760 with heifers £1,420 and feeding bulls £1,410.

In the breeding section cows with calves reached £1,800 with in calvers £1,620.

Whether we shall continue to see such large numbers remains to be seen, but if you have stores to sell try not to leave it till the last minute to book them in.

There were 136 finished cattle forward with the best on offer to 289p and £2,081 per head.

The 46 heifers averaged 253 pence giving some indication of the level of trade.

149 OTM and feeding cattle this week with the top figures 246p and £2,145.  The overall average remains at a very solid 170.4 pence almost exactly the same as last week.

A short week for calves with only 31 for sale, bulls made £320 and heifers £220.

A good turnout of sheep bearing in mind that many regular vendors purchased theaves and rams at last week’s sales.

There were 1389 lambs with top figures 282p and £146.34 per head.

Price very dependant on the level of finish with the heavier well meated lambs making their money and the plainer types harder to sell.

680 cull sheep on parade with a good proportion of plain sorts in the entry.  Ewes sold to £154, but the average was back somewhat at £68.44.
