Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report for Monday 11th November 2019 11-11-2019

With all the flooding and associated troubles, a smaller market was in prospect, but this was not the case with 805 Cattle and 1,935 Sheep on offer at Bakewell.

Despite dismal weather things were much brighter as far as trade was concerned with Finished Lambs and Finished Cattle recording very respectable prices and plenty of confidence in the Store and Breeding Cattle department.

To be more specific there were 489 Store and Breeding forward including special entries of in-calf heifers. These attracted plenty of interest with the best on offer selling to £1,500. Cows & Calves made up to £1,005 and a Limousin Stock Bull at £1,320. Of the regular Store Cattle trade was distinctly up beat with Steers to £1,150, Heifers £990 and Feeding Bulls £950.

The Finished Cattle section at Bakewell continues to attract substantial numbers with 126 on parade this week. Best on offer made 232p and £1,442 per head, but the trade is best summed up by the 60 Heifers which averaged a very decent 186p.

Only 43 Calves, possibly a result of the miserable weather with a strong trade for the better sorts. Bulls to £405 and Heifers £330.

Turning to the Sheep, there were 1,253 Finished Lambs with trade much the same as last week. Top figures 230p and £111.36 per head and the SQQ looking good at 186.3p

Finally, the Cull Sheep, 658 on offer with Ewes to £120 and the average £65.77.

147 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – overall average 93.6p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

Many more Cows than last week and indeed the same week last year. Many thanks to all those who responded to the advert to send Cattle to Bakewell. We have a big ring of buyers, 16 different individuals today purchasing Cows, including 8 different feeding buyers. That is the beauty of a ‘Green Market’ with purchasers looking to improve the value of Cows. Surely this is better than one mans opinion when they are hanging up. Cows today peaked at 153p for a Limousin from CA Lymer, Leek with a big Cow from JA Mosley, Stannington at 143p or £1186.

82 Black & White and ex dairy cows ave 87.3p

The leaner they are the dearer they look which is lucky because there were a lot of very plain ex parlour types about today with good meated sorts few and far between. Geoff Limer, Taddington had a couple at 116p with better sorts generally over £1. Big Holsteins 90-100p with plainer sorts 80-90p and very plain cows generally 70-80p. 13 Jerseys and 8 Shorthorn Cows today all in the averages and all sold on a competitive trade.

489 head is a sizeable entry with numbers swelled by the special consignments of in-calf heifers in the Breeding Cattle section.
