Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report for Monday 14th October 2019 2019-10-14

Back end has arrived, and with the rain and mud the need to house or market stock. Numbers well up at Bakewell with 936 Cattle and 2,140 Sheep forward.

A bumper entry of 542 Store & Breeding Cattle sold on an outstanding trade with new buyers operating and many prices better than recent weeks, an unuasual phenomenom at this time of year.

Steers reached £1,150 and Heifers £985 with Feeding Bulls to £880. Younger Cattle looked very well sold and several runs of Angus crosses sold on a very strong trade.

A good turnout of 142 Finished Cattle saw top figures of 230p and £1,481, but quality was mixed and also ran cattle were harder to sell.

The prospect of housing for winter had clearly concentrated minds and the OTM and Feeding Cow section was busy with 163 head. Clearly quality was generally lower, but the best on offer made up to 170p and £1,465 per head and the average was down somewhat at 94.6p.

89 Calves this week with Bulls to £290 and Heifers £210.

In the Sheep section Lamb numbers were usefully up with 1,179 finished Lambs on offer.

Trade for the better sorts was stronger and at the other end of the scale prices for also rans were weaker. The best reached 221p and £104.38 per head. The SQQ average much the same as last week at 169 pence.

In the Cull Ewe department numbers were well up at 954 with shop keppers clearly sorting out any passengers before winter.

163 OTM, BARREN & FEEDING COWS – overall average 94.6p (Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

One of the biggest entries of the year with 163 Cattle sold from 72 different vendors from the Peak District and surrounding counties. Trade has gone very autumnal with a lot of cows showing the weather on their backs, but here like everywhere else more cows on offer leads to a reduction in price. Two lovely blue cows at the top of the pile this week with Mark Sweetmore at 170p (£1465) and Adam Neachell at 168p (£1253). Plenty of cows kept today for further feeding/fattening with 72 heading to 10 new homes to be kept alive to improve their value for another day. Thank goodness for a ‘Green Market’ where this can happen.

72 Black & White and ex dairy cows ave 96.3p

Definitely less money again with the best Cows having the biggest correction in price, 15 best Cows still topped 100 pence with a high of 120p for a smart 12-year-old Friesian for Messrs Woodfine, Radbourne. Better Holstein 90-100p with leaner sorts 80-90p and plain Cows looking best sold 70-80p.

542 STORE & BREEDING CATTLE - (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

A massive entry of 542 head attracted several new buyers and a tremendous trade prevailed from start to finish.

The auctioneers would like to thank their droving and clerking staff for sorting, numbering and processing both the cattle and the paperwork in such a timely fashion.

It would be appreciated if vendors could ensure that their stock arrives in the market with time to spare so that prospective purchasers have the opportunity to view them prior to sale.

Trade a little easier, plenty of potential purchasers but bidding a little cautiously today.

Plenty of interest in the Heifers, but again at sensible money with Limousins to £210 and Herefords to £205.
