Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report for Monday 27th July 2020-07-27

The rules have changed yet again with masks required within the market buildings and around the sale rings.  Sincere thanks to everyone who came prepared and abided to by the recommendations of the Livestock Auctioneers Association and the Government.  There was full compliance with this new measure which, bearing in mind new outbreaks could be with us for some time to come.  The only other change to normal procedures concerned those bidders who normally twitch the corners of their mouth to bid and have now had to change to hand signals.  It is a small price to pay for making things safer and allowing the market to keep running.  Thank you for your co-operation.

Sheep numbers were well up at 2,161 the largest entry for some time.  Cattle numbers down a bit at 433, but what we lacked in quantity was made up for with quality and prices to match.

Store Cattle numbers at 194 with a shortage of younger cattle.  Trade was even dearer than we have seen it in recent weeks with Steers to £1,360, Heifers £1,275 and Feeding Bulls £755.

Bakewell buyers want your stores now, ask yourselves whether you want to keep them into the Autumn with trade as it is.

There were 116 Finished Cattle with prices that are clearly driving the demand for Stores.

Top figures 240p and £1,509, Steers averaged and the 52 Heifers averaged 204.3p which should give you something to think about.

Please find us some more OTM Cattle, demand has outstripped the supply which was 93 head this week.

Top figures 192 and £1,455 per head.

The average was an extraordinary 140.9p for an entry with a good many plain cows in it.

Calf numbers down again at 30 with Bulls to 440 and Heifers £350. So, nothing wrong with the trade.

And now to the sheep.  1,603 Lambs forward with the best on offer to 266p and £120.04 The SQQ for a mixed sample at 226.2p (last year it was 182 pence)

A handful of old season lambs still finding their way to Bakewell selling to 189p and £97.02.

467 Cull Sheep to include a good many hill breeds topped at £122 to average £72.05.
