Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

A new exciting event for Bakewell was held last Thursday with a special breeding day held on a Thursday to coincide with the regular sheep sale at Bakewell.

Just over 100 cattle were listed with 16 stock bulls as well as cows & calves, in calf heifers and bulling heifers.

The sale commenced with the stock bulls with 16 entered from 14 different vendors and just about every breed represented.  Limousins won the day and found most favours with a 17-month-old pedigree bull from Alan Maier, Brassington seeing the days top price of £5,500.  Southview Vantage was sired by Elderberry Oldsmobile and was from a High Health Herd with easy calving bloodlines.  He was purchased by a renowned suckler calf producer from the Peak District.  Blue bulls from Mark Froggatt sold to £4,400 and Simmentals from Greyhound Estates, Northampton sold at £4,000.

The days larges consigner of breeding cattle came from the commercial Simmental herd of Messrs Atkin Bros, Barrow on Trent.  They sold 11 cow & calf outfits to average £3,118 and topped at £3,600 for an Angus x Simmental cow, 5 ½ yrs with her Simmental steer calf at foot.  They also sold 12 Sim x in calf heifers for August calving that topped at £2,400 for the youngest heifer of the run at just 23 months.

Trade was generally brisk for the cows & calves with bidders with bidders working hard to secure the quality.

Five good runs of bulling heifers possibly sold the best on the day with all the cattle selling way beyond expectations.  Best price was £2,900 for a pedigree Simmental heifer (2yrs) from Messrs Renshaw & Brassington, Church Broughton and pedigree Limousins from Malcolm Bennett made £2,550 and £2,500 at 11 mnths old.  Commercial red Limousins up to £2,120 for a pair of 2-year-old sorts from Ed Beech, Werrington.
