Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

HPLS SHOW & SALE OF SUCKLED CALVES Friday 16th October

The HPLS Annual October Calf Show & Sale will go down in the history books as one of the most remarkable days ever.  The cattle, the trade, the atmosphere at Bakewell were all on the very best form with prices way up again this year.

The sale was preceded by a pre-sale show with vendor putting forward the best from their runs of steers & heifers to be judged.  Judged this year by veteran store cattle buyer and finisher Don Lownds from Reapsmoor who did an excellent job of inspecting all of the cattle forward in the various classes before deciding on his champion.  This year the winner was Jonothan Hall of Longnor who won the B Blue steer class with a 5 month old cross bred calf, that went on to sell in the sale for £2,200 to a regular Cheshire purchaser.  Many thanks go to the sponsor of the show, Wadland Finance who have been good supporters of the market at Bakewell.

The sale promptly started at 10.30 with the bulls followed on with the steers & heifers.  The cattle were sold in good sized even bunches that allowed the sale progress quickly, but also kept these calves (generally 4-8 months old) quiet and better to handle for the farmers and market staff.  All cattle were sold before 2pm allowing buyers ample time to load their purchases and take them home before nightfall.

Trade on the whole was unreal.  Average in 2025 were approximately £500 up on the previous year, again this year we saw another rise of £150 overall.  The standard of cattle gets better every year with the travelled buyers and regulars suggesting that the quality of the High Peak Cattle will surpass all other suckled calf sales in the country.

Bagshaws would like to thank all who made the sale a success.  The New Year Sale will be held on Friday 15th January 2027 with the March event scheduled for 12th March 2027.
