HPLS Suckled Calf Sale for Friday 18th October 2019 18-10-2019
High Peak suckled calf sale sees trade up on the year
Just under 800 suckled calves were catalogued for the October suckled calf sale at Bakewell and with the trade expected to be less, as we have seen at other centres in the North, trade was actually dearer on the year.
A very good ring of buyers descended from the Eastern counties, the Welsh borders and surrounding areas to bid for the quality that the Bakewell sales and the High Peak producers are renowned for.
The majority of the cattle were 5-7 months old and looked in good order due to the favourable summer and good growing conditions. They were generally sold in well-matched bunches and the buyers certainly appreciated that.
The finished cattle trade is somewhat in the doldrums at present and this has had an effect on store cattle values, however, the long term prospect of the Bakewell suckled calves did not deter and buyers were in confident mood to secure a load. Averages for the bulls and heifers were up £42 and £21 respectively, with the steers seeing a small drop of £11 on the year.
The sale progressed in good fashion with good bunches of well matched cattle arriving at the ring to be bid for. The sale commenced at 10.30am and by 2pm all cattle had been sold with the vast majority on their way to their new homes by 4pm.
Bagshaws would like to thank all hauliers, the yard staff, the High Peak Livestock Society and all its members for making the sale at Bakewell a huge success for 2019.
