50 GOLDEN YEARS OF THE HIGH PEAK LIVESTOCK SOCIETY

A celebration day at Bakewell to mark 50 years of the HPLS.  The society was formed by 12 founder members who met at the Cat & Fiddle pub in 1974 with the aim of promoting High Peak livestock through sales at Bakewell and formerly at other sites, including Morridge, Glossop & Biggin.

For the first time and to mark the occasion we held a show of the suckled calves with 8 classes for Limousin, British Blue, Charolais & Blond steers & heifers as well as a championship.

The show was judged by Mr Roger Egglestone of Nixons Farm Shop, Heald Green near Manchester Airport, who has been ever present at the side of the ring purchasing quality store calves at the High Peak sales.  The show was sponsored by HJ Lea Oakes, Feed Merchants & Specialists based at Crewe.

The winning calf was an immaculately bred British Blue Steer from Dan & Sam Byard, Ashover that sold for the day’s top price of £1,650.

The overall class of cattle that the High Peak farmers produce rises year on year and are now completely unrecognisable from the first sale 50 years ago.  The cattle are incredibly well bred by modern bulls and generally out of continental suckler cows.

The cattle today were only young as we expect at this sale with the majority Feb to May born and would definitely be classified as long term projects for the purchasers.

The sale progressed quickly and after the initial formalities were over the bidders got to work in trying to secure good even bunches of calves.  Trade was fast from the start with the averages way up this year as they were in 2023.
