Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

HPLS Suckled Calves 2023-10-13

An entry of just over 700 cattle was received for the prestigious HPLS October Suckled Calf Sale.

The breeding and overall quality of the cattle in the Peak District rises year on year and allied to a favourable Summer for keeping cattle meant the cattle were surely the best we have ever seen in Bakewell.  The buyers were obviously impressed with the average way up on the year as they have been every year for the last four.

Today as usual at this sale the cattle were young with nearly all of them in the 4-7 month old category and would be classed as long-term projects for summer grazing next year and finished next Winter.

The sale progressed quickly with the cattle arriving at the ring in good sized, even bunches with only a few very special individuals being sold on their own.

The sale commenced at 10.30 with the hammer being knocked down on the final animal at 1.45pm.

Bagshaws would like to thank all for making the sale such a success.  The hauliers for delivering and removing the cattle so promptly, the vendors for showing some wonderful cattle once again, the Bagshaws team in the market for handling the cattle so well allowing the sale to progress so promptly and the buyers who return year on year to support the sale in buying cattle.
