Leek Market Report for Tuesday 12th November 2019 12-11-2019

A wet day at Leek, but that didn’t put off stock numbers with a packed shed full of pigs this Tuesday being a buoyant trade throughout selling to 140p/kg.

Lambs a much firmer trade and many more could have been sold! Top price of 218p/kg with an overall average of 188p/kg, easily up 15 – 20 pence on the week. Culls ewes still in good demand also selling to £115 to average £57.45.

Dairies sold to a top of £1900 for a fresh 30kg heifer from John Allan, Tutbury, with cows to £1760.

A good number of cull cattle again this week, with prices being slightly less on the week, but saw spirited bidding with cows to 120p/kg and clean up to 177p/kg.

Calves continue to sell at a trade were becoming accustomed to, with good quality Blue bulls to £360, and heifers at £275.

Trade similar to last week but less quality about to last week which effects the overall average.

Top price of 120p/kg for a 655kg Limousin from W E Turnock & Sons, Onecote, with a 655kg Blonde from C H Ede & Son, Somersall Herbert at 118p/kg. A 705kg Limousin sold at 115p/kg for C A Lymer, Cheddleton.

Black & whites sold to 114p/kg for a 615kg Holstein from DR & BA Cotton, Whiston.

Overall average of 84.05p/kg or £562.08 per head.

Top headage price of £994.85 for the 985kg Hereford from J E Watson, with Angus cows to £949.20, Shorthorns to £866.25 and Holsteins to £812.25.

One overage 805kg Angus steer sold for 111p/kg or £893.55 for J Morrey, Audley.

CLEAN CATTLE (23);

More about this week, but still no best quality forward. Top price of 177p/kg for a 470kg British Blue steer from G W Forrester, Abbots Bromley, with other steers at 148p/kg for a 640kg Simmental.

Heifers topped at 166p/kg for a 515kg British Blue, with a 695kg British Blue at 159p/kg and a 625kg British Blue at 158p/kg. A 580kg British Blue heifer from Reg Critchlow, Grindon sold at 157p/kg, who also sold a 635kg British Blue heifer at 156p/kg.

Young bulls sold up to 170p/kg for a 680kg Angus from J E Archer & sons, Hilton, who also sold a 565kg Friesian at 162p/kg, a 585kg and 545kg Friesian at 160p/kg.

Top headage prices of £947.20 for steers, heifers to £1105.05 and bulls to £1156.

A solid trade today saw John Allan of Tutbury top the day at £1900 for a stylish 30kg heifer to Andrew Hulme of Basford.

Hot in pursuit at £1880 was a heifer from the Broomhouse herd of Messrs Eason to the same home.

Cows topped at £1760 for a second calver from George and David Platt of Gawsworth to Messrs Brocklehurst of Wincle.

Double the entry of pigs forward and a nice trade again this week.

Pork pigs sold to 106p/kg for a trio of 71kg pigs from G & I Middleton, Dereham.

Cutting pigs sold to 132p/kg for a pair of 82.5kg pigs from J & B Fentem, with an 83kg pig at 124p/kg from J W Bailey, Cloudside and 124p/kg for 85kg pigs from J & B Fentem.

Bacon pigs sold to 140p/kg for 87.5kg pigs from PF & PD Parsons, Maelor with the same family selling 89kg pigs at 134p/kg, 90.6kg pigs at 132p/kg and 90kg pigs at 126p/kg.

Heavy pigs sold to 124p/kg for a 107kg pig from S Bailey, Knypersley with 105kg pigs at 122p/kg from H A Hollins, Market Drayton who also sold 109kg pigs at 116p/kg. other heavy pigs at 116p/kg for 107kg and 115kg pigs from D H Poulson, Llangadog.

Cull sows topped at 76p/kg (three times) for 250kg, 243kg, and 224kg sows from G & I Middleton, Dereham, with others at 74p/kg for a 152kg sow from CL & R Holton, Coventry and also for a 138kg sow from S Proctor, Longnor.

Store pigs sold at £28 per head for a pen of 30kg pigs from CL & R Holton, and also for a pen of 8 and 9 pigs from S Proctor, Longnor.

A disappointing entry but probably not surprising given the adverse weather which does not encourage anyone to sort lambs for sale.

Trade a marked improvement to a top of 218p/kg and best sorts regularly 200p and above.

Handy weights again heavily sought after with 32kg sorts up to 196p/kg.

Heavy lambs seeing a firmer trade, up approximately 10-15p, but no best lambs to create headline prices.

Overall average of 188p/kg.

A smaller entry saw a steadier trade in general, but still best sorts selling to £115 from J Spalton, Derby and £106 from Frank Heath, Pipe Gate.

Overall average of £58/head including a large proportion of mules.

A few more on offer and trade very much as we have come to expect. Some better calves, particularly bulls look very well sold but some smaller sorts are very buyable at present.

49 Continental Bulls av £154.81

A big gap between the best that look well sold and the rest. Top 10 bulls over £250 with a high of £360 for the Cotton family, Tean who had another at £300. N E Goodwin & Son had £345 for his Blue with good Limousins to £315. Medium bulls £180 – £240 with smaller bulls around £100.

30 Blues av £164 to £360 – FA & TM Cotton, Tean

10 Sims av £158 to £255 – J & C Hudson, Wetton

9 Lims av £121 to £315 – ME & DJ Gregory, Drointon

34 Continental Heifers av £122.97

Similar sort to the bulls with plenty of interest in the best with the rest saleable but at a price. Dale Allen topped the Blues with a couple of well shaped fresh sorts at £275 and £260. 8 best over £180 with mediums £120 – £150 and smalls under £100.

55 Native Hereford & Angus

Best bulls a nice trade with the best 6 over £170 to a high of £220 for C V Whilock & Sons, Ipstones. Plenty of smaller calves look good value at present.

25 Black & White bulls av £35.14

A little more interest with a few better shaped sorts about J & W Knight had £98 for his Friesian and Mark Hodgkinson £95 for his Holstein. Medium rearer’s £40 – £60 with processing sorts generally £10 – £30 today.
