Leek Market Store Report for Saturday 12th October 2019 12-10-2019

A good entry of 653 store and breeding cattle were presented for sale.

Breeding Section

Cows with calves at foot were a similar trade to two weeks ago, with a number of buyers looking for breeding outfits.

In calf heifers sold up to £1300 for a pure bred in calf Simmental heifer from D Klucznik of Longsdon being PD’d to the pedigree Simmental bull. The same vendor sold a second similar outfit for £1200 and a third for £1160.

A British White cow with a Simmental heifer calf at foot from D Klucznik exchanged hands for £1380 and B Goldstraw of Winkhill sold a Limousin cow with a Limousin bull calf at foot for £1200, with a second outfit from the same vendor being a British Blue cow with a Limousin bull calf at £1140.

A Limousin heifer with a Limousin heifer calf at foot from G J Moss & Sons of Buglawton exchanged hands for £1120.

Young Bulls

This section was topped at £910 for a 15 month old Limousin bull from B Goldstraw of Winkhill, with an 8 month old Limousin from N Taylor of Mowcop at £840.

A 13 month old Simmental from D J Woodcock of Rugeley exchanged hands for £750 with other Simmentals up to 10 months old from G Bailey of Rushton Spencer also selling up to £750.

A 14 month old Limousin from F R Alcock of Cheadle exchanged hands for £710, with Holstein bulls from W E Turnock & Sons of Onecote up to £620.

Hereford bulls from Messrs Brough & Fox of Hurdlow sold up to £510.

Overall average for young bulls was £385.54, which included a large proportion of smaller, Holstein cross bulls.

Steers

There were 258 steers on offer, with top price of the section being £1175 which was paid for a good quality named Aberdeen Angus from M Ollerenshaw of Bradwell, with another Aberdeen Angus from new vendor Mr Cowap of Haslington being 19 months old exchanging hands for £1070 and a further Aberdeen Angus from M Ollerenshaw being 25 months old at £990.

A pair of Blonde D’Aquataine steers being 18 months old from E Eardley of Sutton sold for £1120, with a single 14 month old Blonde D’Aquataine from the same vendor at £1060.

A pair of 26 month old Limousins from J Gilman & Partners of Bosley achieved £1095, with an 18 month old Limousin from C S Machin & Family of Bagnall selling for £1070 and a further Limousin from M Ollerenshaw being 27 months old exchanging hands for £1050.

British Blue steers from P & P D Okill of Marton topped at £1040 for animals being 25 months old, with a 19 month old British Blue from J R Hall deceased of Endon at £1035 and a 26 month old Bazadaise from A Buxton of Bollington at £1020.

A group of three 17 month old Charolais’ from S Kidd of Quarnford sold for £995, with Herefords at 21 months old from D Cope of Endon up to £925.

Younger sorts sold up to £840 for a 12 month old British Blue steer from S B Mellor & Sons of Winkhill, with an 8 month old Aberdeen Angus steer from R Toon of Ashbourne at £780 and a further Aberdeen Angus from the same vendor at 6 months old exchanging hands for £775.

S B Mellor & Sons received £760 for a 7 month old Limousin.

Overall average for steers was £668.83.

Heifers

There were 275 heifers on offer, with the top price of the day being £1040 for a 29 month old Limousin from W Tomkinson of Calwich, with a group of four 25 month old Limousin

heifers from K Sessions of Alkmonton at £950 and a pair of 23 month old Limousin heifers from J Gilman & Partners of Bosley at £945.

A group of three good quality, well shaped Blonde D’Aquataine heifers from E Eardley of Sutton sold for £1000, with a single 13 month old from the same vendor at £985.

A 17 month old British Blue from Mrs Matthews of Aston-by Stone sold for £945, with Aberdeen Angus heifers up to £905 for a 26 month old heifer from E C Stoddard of Kingsley, with a 21 month old Aberdeen Angus from R Britland of Mobberley at £835.

Younger cattle sold up to £700 for a 12 month old British Blue heifer from S B Mellor & Son of Winkhill with an 8 month old Limousin from D Fox of Waterhouses at £690 and 7 month old Charolais’ from Waller Farms of Sutton up to £595.

Overall average for heifers was £593.60.
