Leek Market Store Report for Saturday 9th November 09-11-2019

A total entry of 402 store and breeding cattle were on offer at the fortnightly sale, with trade firmer than two weeks ago, with plenty of buyers in attendance.

Breeding Section

There was a shortage of quality suckler cows and calves with the top price of the section being £1120 which was paid for a Simmental cow with a Simmental heifer calf at foot from D Klucznik of Longsdon with the same vendor selling a Simmental cow with a Hereford heifer calf for £1080.

There was one stock bull forward, which was a 23 month old pedigree Hereford from Walker Farms of Hulland Ward which sold for £900.

Young Bulls

Top price of the section was £670 which was paid for a 27 month old Hereford from Mr Bessant of Ashbourne, with a pair of 13 month old British Blue bulls from R Collington of Wymeswold at £560. A 13 month old Aberdeen Angus from the same farmer exchanged hands for £410, with an 8 month old Blonde D’Aquataine bull from E G Taylor & Partners of Rugeley at £405.

There was a number of smaller sorts on offer to reduce the overall average to £412.

Steers

There were 228 steers on offer, with top price of the section being £1090 which was paid for a pair of 17 month old Aberdeen Angus from S & S Brain of Cresswell, with a single 18 month old Aberdeen Angus from the same farmers at £1050 and a further 18 month old Aberdeen Angus from Rushton Spencer at £985.

A pair of 19 month old Limousin steers from J & J Mellor of Kniveton, being good quality cattle were kindly bid for and finally sold for £1080, with a 16 month old Limousin from S & S Brain at £1075 and a 28 month old Limousin from F R Allcock of Chealde at £1050.

British Blue steers from S Seabridge of Holywood achieved up to £1050, with another single from G Platt & Family of Gawsworth being 25 months old selling for £1010. A group of three being 26 months old also from G Platt & Family exchanged hands for £980.

A group of three 25 month old Herefords from G Platt & Family were well sold at £1030, with a single 25 month old Hereford from the same vendors at £965. Cont’d…

Bazadaise steers at 29 months of age from Mr Mason of Kniveton sold up to £995, with Charolais steers being 18 months old from S & S Brain at £970.

Black and White steers from S Seabridge sold up to £775 being 26 months old.

Younger sorts sold up to £695 for Charolais’ from S Kidd Farmers of Longnor and £685 for 11 month old Blonde D’Aquataine steers from E G Taylor & Partners and £670 for a group of four Charolais’ being 8 months old from E Hudson of New Mills.

Overall average for steers was £652.48.

Heifers

There were 139 heifers on offer, with top price being £870 which was paid for a pair of 17 month old Charolais’ from S & S Brain of Cresswell, with a single 25 month old Aberdeen Angus from Mollatt Partnership of Field at £865 and a second from the same vendor being 23 months old at £835.

A group of four 22 month old British Blue heifers from J Fryer of Horton sold for £835, with a group of three similar aged cattle from the same vendor at £830.

Another 23 month old British Blue heifer from Anders Agricultural of Roston sold for £795, with Bazadaise heifers from Mr Mason of Kniveton being 28 months old up to £795.

Younger sorts sold up to £795 for an 11 month old Blonde D’Aquataine heifer from E G Taylor & Partners of Rugeley, with a pair of 9 month old Limousins from S B Mellor & Sons of Winkhill at £700. A single 9 month old Limousin from the same farmer sold for £540.

Overall average achieved for heifers was £525.83.
