Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report 2024-10-07

Worrying times with the Bluetongue boundary now on the Nottinghamshire border and preventing a few regulars from coming to see us.

How long the current situation will prevail is impossible to say.  The most recent changes came with no warning and immediate effect.

All we can do is keep up to date with Defra/APHA announcements.  Any changes that directly affect Bakewell market will be broadcast on our website and facebook pages.

If you have any questions about the Bluetongue zones, please speak to Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441.

Whether as a result of or in spite of Bluetongue changes, the market was busy with 859 cattle and 1,878 sheep on offer.

The store and breeding cattle section was well supported with 495 head on offer.

Trade was better than last week with a full line up of buyers and cattle purchased from Bakewell able to travel without restriction.  Steers sold to £1,900, heifers £1,780 and feeding bulls £810.

In the breeding section cows and calves topped at £2,000 with in calf cows to £1,780.

There were 122 finished cattle with one or two regular vendors caught the wrong side of the line and unable to attend.

Trade looked good with top figures 364p/kg and £2,635 per head.

The average for the 55 heifers was a hefty 293.0 pence.

Less OTM cattle forward with only 99 on offer.  Top figures 269p and £2,243 per head.  The average was a solid 185.0p.

A remarkable entry of 143 calves would be a record for recent times.

Trade was outstanding with bulls to £590 and heifers £430.

Fewer sheep about than last week with some vendor clearly locked down after buying breeding sheep.

The 1,241 lambs sold on a healthy trade with top figures 326p/kg and £177.64/head.

The SQQ average emerged at 278.8p a whisker dearer than last week.

The overall average was 281.5p and indication that heavier lambs are wanted.

637 cull sheep with ewes to £199 and the average rather better than last week at £101.88

This map shows the current restriction zones as of 8th October 2024

If there are any changes we will announce these as soon as possible via our website & Facebook and the Store List

99 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 185.1p/kg or £1269

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

(Up 2 pence on the week)

They seem to want the cows less but the average is up again and at a time of year when they are normally in freefall.  All the better cows comfortably over 210 pence with OTM clean to 269p for Messrs Mellor, Chinley.  All the best cows to 242p for a good Limmy from Alan Maier, Brassington, who had another at £2140.  The cows are good to sell at present with a strong finished cattle price that is holding up the cow end well.  The best way to achieve the maximum value of your cows when they are going up is on their legs in Bakewell.

Cull Sheep

(Auctioneers M Elliott & H Swift)

A very strong entry of slaughter ewes and rams with the trade faster but a lot higher percentage of heavier meated ewes within the total penned.

Best continentals regularly £148 plus and the premium Texels £170 and above.

A top call of £199 for a pure Texel from the sportsman flock of Boden & Davies with Messrs Furness & Taylor and Ben Simpson both at £178 for their best and Jackie Trueman at £177.

Better Mules towards £110 and Gritstone in the £90 bracket.

Still a large compliment of grazing customers there to bid with all categories and breeds well bid for.

Texel rams to £206.
