Bakewell Market Report Monday 23rd June

A strong entry for June with a total of 568 cattle and 1032 sheep on offer.

The cattle comprised 295 head of store & breeding cattle, 136 finished and 95 OTM’s.  Whilst the sheep included 592 finished lambs, 157 hoggs and 283 cull ewes.

Oliver reported finished cattle a similarly strong trade to last week despite reports of reduced deadweight returns with heifers returning an average of 371.49p/kg and a top of £2962 per head.  Finished bulls averaged 344p/kg to a top of £3325.90.

A slightly reduced entry of OTM’s but trade equally as dear as recent weeks with the average up some 3p/kg on the week to average 272.33 and steers peaking at £3105 and bulls at £3558.

Store & Breeding cattle numbers very respectable for the time of year totalling 275 store & 20 breeding cattle with a large gathering of prospective purchasers present and a strong trade for all types, Cow & calf outfits to £2320, steers to £2260 and heifers to an impressive £2800.

Sheep numbers very similar with 592 Spring lambs, 157 Hoggs and an increase in cull ewes at 283 with lambs back on last week to average 358.74p/kg but still well in line with the National trend, whilst ewes looked well sold to average £155 and top of £238.

 

PLEASE NOTE

The changes to Bluetongue regulations from the 1st July with the whole of England being within the Bluetongue Restricted Zone, after 1st July stock can come to Bakewell from areas previously under restriction.

UP 3 PENCE ON THE WEEK

 

A bit dearer again for the predominantly leaner entry but this suited an army of buyers at ringside who bid well and the keeping cattle too hot to handle for the meat wholesalers.  Heavy meated sorts as always sell at a premium with the better sorts easily 300p plus and a high of 364p for a young 36 mnth old Limmy from PV Hawkins with the best cow close behind at 352p.  Cows are on the up again, 2 weeks now we have seen them rise.  Keep the numbers coming.

A few less to go a with not so many stronger cattle about.  Trade, however, still topped at £2800 for a pair of 14 month old Blond heifers from CW Shenton of Wilmslow.

A few less outfits forward this week but all sold to a good trade.  The Latham family of Sudbury led the way with a Limousin cow and Simmental heifer calf at £2320.  Two young Blue cows with Limousin heifer calves from the Kirkham family of Hartington reached £2300 and £2220.

Better Gritstones over £120 with stronger Mules £150 plus.

In the tups strong Texels £180 plus to a top of £200.

The ewe average up to a pleasing £155.52 and rams to average £172.
