BLUETONGUE NEWS

The 1st July is a critical date because from now on the whole of England becomes one zone meaning that for movements of livestock within England no tests or licences are needed.

The situation with regard to Wales and Scotland continues to change, but as things stand there are serious concerns that Welsh buyers will not be able to purchase English sheep at the Autumn sales.

With regard to Bluetongue vaccinations, we continue to recommend that farmers should contact their vet for advice on protecting their stock.

If you have any Bluetongue related queries, speak to Alastair Sneddon on 07973 982441 or ring the Bakewell Office on 01629 812777

The store and breeding cattle section had a decent seasonal entry of 321 head and there were sufficient buyers present to ensure a brisk trade from start to finish, Steers topped at £2,460 with heifers to £2,010 and young bulls to £1,800.

In the breeding section a Simmental cow and calf outfit made £4,000.

There was a useful turnout of 134 finished cattle with trade well up to expectations, top figures 429p/kg and £3,455 with the average for the 59 heifers at 366.8p/kg and £2,186 per head.

A few more OTM cattle forward with a total of 121 on offer.  Top figures 346p/kg and £3,328 per head.

The average emerged at 267.4p/kg with a per head figure looking strong at £1,731.

38 calves on offer with trade at unprecedented levels.  Bulls sold to £860 with heifers to £600.

The sheep section attracted some 706 Spring lambs with the best on offer to 368p/kg and £178.20 per head.

The SQQ average was a solid 342.5 pence.  It remains to be seen how the trade will compare with other centres as the week progresses.

Only a handful of hoggs as supplies dry to a tickle, the best on offer sold to 338p/kg and £165 per head.

Cull sheep in fairly short supply with 230 forward and ewes to £218 to average a hefty £154.58.

121 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 267.5p/kg or £1731

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

The average back a couple of pence but I can’t see where because they actually felt dearer and most commentators thought that they were.  All the better sorts still north of £3/kilo with the best price being 346p or £3329 for a superb red roaned Limmy x cow from Jack Blackshaw with all of the biggest fleshed cows over £2200.  Cows look to have stabilised with the next movement likely to be up, so if you have cows to sell, now is the time to sort through any passengers and show them in Bakewell to a large audience of buyers for processing or further feeding.

Similar numbers to last week with some cattle perhaps a little dearer and the in-spec cattle very good to sell.
