Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 7th July

Rain at last with a measurable quantity over the last couple of days, but more hot weather to come.

Decent entries of stock for a July market with 688 cattle and 1,252 sheep on offer.

We have arranged a meeting in the market on Thursday 17th July at 7.30pm.

A team of verts will be giving presentations on the benefits of vaccination.

It is important that we all know the facts.

With buyers from Wales unable to purchase sheep from England at present, if and when the rules change vaccination might be an important factor.

We have had a bumper entry of store & breeding cattle with a total of 368 forward, an unheard of entry for the time of year.

Whether this is because of a shortage of keep and fodder it is hard to say, but we ended up with a superb selection with several special entries of top notch cattle.

Bolstered by encouraging noises from the finished ring, trade was excellent with steers to £2,480 ave £1,517 with heifers to £2,760 ave £1,437 and a lovely lot of feeding bulls selling to £2,320 to average £1,707.

In the breeding section cows and calves topped at £2,280.

Over in the finished ring there were 124 cattle forward with top figures of 438p/kg and £3,004 per head.

The 72 heifers averaged 372.2 pence/kilo and £2,296 per head.

All in all, an encouraging result.

OTM cattle were out in force with 134 on offer.  No slacking of trade with the best to 350p/kg and £3,102 per head.  The averages were 265.7p/kg and £1,726 per head.

62 calves this week, the most for some time.

The prices tell their own story with bulls to £750 and heifers £665.

In the sheep department there was a decent selection of 774 Spring lambs.  Trade solid with the best to 388p/kg and £187.98 per head.

The SQQ average emerged at 333.3 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg range worth £144.46 per head.

There were 400 cull sheep forward with ewes to £252 to average a healthy £137.90.

440 Ewes and Rams

(Auctioneers Mark Elliott & Holly Swift)

A very good July entry with nearly 450 penned.

There was spirited bidding in all categories with the better end continentals regularly £215 and above.

Top call £252 for smart Texels from Furness and Taylor with others at £220.

Several runs of stronger continental types £180-£196 with the better end Mules over £155/head.  Top 6 pens average £219.66.

Best Swales £122 plus and purchasers out for the plainer ewes to slaughter immediately.

In fairness, the average at £138.85 reflects a higher proportion of leaner and horned ewes rather than a great reduction in price and trade was good throughout.

In the rams some big strong Texels dominated the entry with these selling at £252 and £190 for the best.

Shropshire rams to £181.

Ewes to £252 ave £138.85

Tups to £252  ave £193.83
