Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 14th July

Another warm one with 605 cattle and 1,311 forward.  Trade good in all sections and satisfactory results all round.

Don’t forget the Bluetongue meeting on Thursday night 17th July at 7.30 at the market.

There were 276 store & breeding cattle which included a few late entries, perhaps being sold because of the keep situation.  Rain is forecast for the next few days so let us hope it arrives in decent quantity.

The store trade remains very strong as finishers compete to keep their yards topped up.

Steers sold to £2,660 to average a cracking £1,595 and heifers £2,360 ave £1,354.

Feeding bulls topped at £1,980 and in the breeding section cows and calves reached £2,300 with an Angus stock bull at £3,750.

Good news from the finished cattle department with top figures for the 128 head at 439p/kg and £3,117 per head.

The 56 heifers averaged 380p and £2,335 nicely up on the week.

In the OTM section there were 124 in total.  Top figures 342p and £3,156 per head.

The average looked good at 266p and a remarkable £1,760 per head.

More calves forward with 77 on offer and new buyers operating, bulls sold to £890 with heifers £675.

In the sheep section there was a good show of 976 lambs and a trade to match.

The best on offer to 376p and £213.13 per head.

The SQQ average was a solid 342.4p making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £147.26.

313 cull sheep forward with ewes to £205 to average £142.70

124 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 266.1p/kg or £1760

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A tremendous entry for July and trade continues to be good with the average 1 pence better than last week and 80 pence more on the year.  Best 20 cows past £3/kg including two at the top call of 342p.  Firstly, for one of a lovely run of Limousins from Trevor Ward, Rotherham and a Limmy x Blue from Dan Byard, Tupton.  There is strong competition at present for the heavy meated cows but also the cows with potential for further feeding.  Is this a sign that cows are going to get even dearer? Only time will tell! One thing for sure is that we at Bakewell are best placed to achieve the maximum value for your cows.

The trade continues to improve with the better sorts stronger again but more bulls and dairy bred cattle on offer today led to a slightly reduced average.  In truth, great news from the sale today and all vendors would go away happy.

313 Ewes and Rams

(Auctioneers Mark Elliott & Holly Swift)

Trade good and nicely over 300 forward in general like in the trade and spirited bidding for the best flesh.

Some smart Texels about but not in big numbers nor at bigger weights and longer carcasses.

Top price £205 for Texels from the Potter family at Bonsall with plenty £189 and above and the top 5 pens averaged nearly £203.

The Mules good to sell but definitely meat and finish making a premium, best goods £168 plus with the best £178 plus.

A few grazers forward and buyers just dipping their toes in the market but in fairness bidders for all types, sizes and qualities.

There was a lack of strong horned types but those forward were well bid for.

In the rams Texels to £188 and £187 for the better fleshed with others £150 plus.
