Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 21st July

Rather more stock about than we expected for the time of year with 546 cattle and 1,336 sheep on offer.

Trade buoyant in all sections and a general sigh of relief that we have had some rain.

The store and breeding cattle section attracted 240 head and there was a particularly strong line up of buyers resulting in a very fast trade.

Steers sold to £2,800 to average £1,458 with heifers to £2,520 to average £1,307.  Feeding bulls sold to £1,920.

The finished cattle section was particularly well supported with 154 in total and all those cattle were wanted as the results clearly demonstrate.

There were 94 cull and OTM cattle, a good number for July.  Top figures 398p/kg and £3,052 per head.

The average looked good at 271.7p and a remarkable £1,775 per head.

A decent selection of 60 calves saw bulls to £790 and £550 for the best heifers.

In the sheep shed there were 929 lambs with trade strong and the best on offer to 370p/kg and £214.10 per head.

The SQQ average was 342.7p making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £146.22.
