Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 28th July

Another respectable gathering of stock for the end of July with a total of 549 cattle and 1291 sheep on offer and trade reported as strong in all departments.

Finished cattle totalled 125 with Oliver indicating prices equally as strong as recent weeks to a top of 442p/kg and £3231in the lump, whilst the OTM’s possibly a shade easier to average 252p/kg but also reflecting a number of plainer Black & White cows within the entry.  Top price nevertheless of 373p/kg and £3470 in the lump.

Store & breeding cattle a little reduced given the time of year with a total of 202 and Meg reporting trade equally as strong as recent weeks with breeding bulls to £4650, steers to £2480 and heifers to £2160.

Calf numbers showed a substantial increase in numbers to 98 with plenty of interest which saw bulls to £730 and heifers £635.

Sheep numbers very similar but pleasing to see a sharper lamb trade to return an overall average of 347.39p/kg which is up 50p on the same week last year with tops of 399p/kg and £214 in the lump.  Cull sheep numbers also similar and trade very sharp for all types to £223 and averaging £146 per head.
