Bakewell Market Report Monday 11th August

A very warm day 573 cattle and 1077 sheep on offer.

A feeling of stock being in short supply with demand strong and prices buoyant.

Lamb numbers down on the year as producers struggle to find lambs fit enough to sell finished.

 

There was a decent show of 298 store and breeding cattle with plenty of buying power in operation and purchasers present from considerable distances to the North and East to compliment the regular set.

Steers topped at £2,620 to average £1,636 with heifers to £2,680 ave £1,332.

Feeding bulls sold to £2,500 to average £1,156.

In the breeding section cows with calves sold to £2,500 and Limousin stock bulls reached £4,400 (7yrs) and £3,950.

We certainly have the customers for store and breeding cattle, if you have some to sell, do not hesitate to contact us.

 

104 finished cattle this week with prices very firm.  Top figures 432p and £3,105.

The average for the 32 heifers shows the strength of demand at 383.8p/kg and £2,302 per head.

 

OTM numbers solid with 101 on offer.  Trade a shade easier with less export demand, but returns still remarkable.  Top figures 366p and £3,110 average 250.1 pence and £1,628 per head.

 

70 calves this week with extraordinary prices.  Bulls to £740 and heifers £475.

 

In the sheep section lambs are in short supply with numbers well down on the year and clearly driving the price.

The 797 lambs reached 390p/kg and £208.55.

The SQQ average was a respectable 384.4 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £148.86.

There were 277 cull sheep on offer with ewes selling to £248 to average £139.69.

Good numbers for mid Summer with over 100 on offer from a wide Geographical area.  Trade generally a little less, although, the average was a penny more and about 70 pence more on this week last year.  6 over age clean topped £3 with a high of 366p for Nick Williams, Newtown.   Best cows generally 280p – £3, some with plenty of weight.

Trade blistering again with the best 6 bulls as good as you would see anywhere.  Ben Langton won the race at 437 and 436p with his Limousins just topping the Wells family at 436p x2 and Steven Jones at 428 and 422p.  5 B/W’s sold to 306p or £1842.

A slightly smaller entry of 1077 sheep saw trade very brisk throughout.  A total of 800 lambs on offer saw best fed lambs very briskly bid for with heavy weight sorts easiest to sell.

Best butchers lambs to 379p/kg with heavy weight butchers lambs to 390p/kg and overweights to 368p/kg.  Top gross of £208.55/head.  Several consignments of native and rare breeds within the entry today saw Hampshires to £195, Southdowns to £167, Jacobs to £142, Dorpers to £188 and Suffolks to £159.

Overall average 348.89p/kg and £151/head.

A very mixed entry but the top 15% were stronger and more stylish than last week and this resulted in inflated top end prices and the top 10 pens averaging over £235/head.

The Kunica Family at Moorwood Moor topped the day at £248 with a strong Texel with Harry Young close behind at £247.  Better continentals regularly £200 plus and good runs of sheep £210 – £222.

Best Mules well over £150/head with some plain and grazing types past £100/head and these looked the best trade of the day.

Generally, all categories a touch dearer than last week and more numbers needed to fulfil demand.

Tups topping at £240 for a pen of 5 Dorpers with Southdowns to £233 and Texels to £204.
