Bakewell Market Report Monday 18th August

A few more stock about for the market before the August Bank Holiday break.

Next week the market is on Tuesday 26th August and we shall be at Hope Show on Bank Holiday Monday.

With regard to numbers there were 681 cattle and 1,849 sheep.

The store and breeding cattle section was well supported with a total of 397 head.

Despite the continuing drought with many acres looking very parched, trade was just as strong as we have seen it in recent weeks.

Steers sold to £2,610 ave £1,534, Heifers to £2,450 ave £1,513 and feeding bulls to £2,750, an Angus Stock Bull sold at £3,300.

There were 106 finished cattle with trade much as last week for a rather mixed sample.

The best on offer reached 423p/kg and £3,234 per head.

The 41 heifers – always a good barometer of the trade averaged 385.3 pence per kilo and £2,352 per head.

In the OTM section there were 98 on offer with trade somewhat sharper, top figures 412p/kg and £3,237 per head.  With regard to averages they were 257p/kg and £1,643 per head, a highly satisfactory result.

The calf department had a good day with 80 calves on offer, bulls sold to £690 and heifers £660.

The sheep section was the busiest we have seen for several months with a total of 1,849 on offer.

The 1,340 lambs sold on a solid trade with the best to 390p and £195.84/head.

The SQQ looked good at a robust 330.2 pence making a typical lamb in the 45-52kg backet worth £160.42.

Cull sheep numbers were also well up with 489 forward, Ewes sold to £270 to average £124.44.

Trade better after a couple of harder weeks they have sprung back with the average 7 pence more on the week and they certainly felt better to sell.  More cows over £3/kilo today with a high of 412p for a superb Limousin heifer from Margaret Heath, Hazlewood £2842 with their cow 350p (£2373).  A big Charolais cow, 8 yrs grossing £3013 for Geoff Goodwin Wetley Rocks.  Buyers for all types today including keeping cows with some buyers looking for leaner cows to feed and improve.

489 Ewes and Rams

A good entry and bidders for everything.

The best ewes a strong trade with the strong meated Mules particularly also good to sell.

Top price £270 for a long shapely Texel from the Cartledge Family, Doveholes (see picture).

Plenty of ewes past £185 and the best 10 pens levelled at £229.60.

Strong Mules to just under £200 but they had to be big frames with not too much fat.  Medium but fleshed Mules £138-£158 per head.

Several buyers out for grazing sorts regardless of breed which saw a strong trade throughout.

In the rams top price £252 for a strong Texel with others at £239 and £228.
