Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Tuesday 26th August

Not a bad turnout for a Tuesday market with trade solid in all sections.

A change in the weather due any day which we hope will improve the keep situation.

A pleasing entry of 79 store cattle sold on an excellent trade with prices much as last week.

Out of the limited selection steers sold to £1,800 and heifers £2,240.

Back to normal numbers next week with a special entry of 20 cows & calves already on the list.

39 finished cattle sold on a decent trade with top figures 408p and £3,080 per head.

The 18 heifers averaged 360p indicating the quality of the sample rather than the level of demand.

Just 18 OTM cattle on offer with top figures 316p and £2,008 per head.  The average was a healthy 248.0 pence.

In the sheep section there were 448 lambs forward with a big range of quality.

Some superb well meated lambs attracting plenty of interest, the under finished ones selling at a different price level.

The best on offer sold to 350pkg and £164.50.  The SQQ average was 301.0p with the overall average 304.8p demonstrating the demand for the heavier well fleshed lambs.

A surprisingly large Tuesday entry of cull sheep included ewes to £235 to average £126.90 for a rather mixed sample.

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneer Alastair Sneddon)

Rather a good entry for a Tuesday market with a total of 79 cattle on offer.  There was sufficient buying power to ensure fair play and prices were much the same as last week.

The quality of cattle in the entry was somewhat mixed with some consignments clearly showing the signs of the very dry conditions that we have experienced lately.
