Bakewell Market Report Monday 8th September

Another busy day in the cattle shed with a total of 863 head on offer, with sheep numbers a little less on last week to a total of 1298.

 

A total of 529 store & breeding cattle comprised 495 store and 34 breeding cattle with trade generally strong to a full ring full of prospective purchasers, although trade reported as a little easier than last week.  Steers nevertheless, topped at £2,370 and heifers at £2,280 whilst cow and calf outfits to £3,150 and breeding bulls to £3,400.

 

Over at Olivers end, finished cattle numbers remaining strong at 135 and comprised 48 bulls, 44 steers and 43 heifers with trade looking equally as strong as recent weeks with bulls to 427p/kg and £2,979 and clean cattle to 438p/kg and £2,863 in the lump.

 

OTM cattle looking very respectable to total 132 and trade strong for both the stronger and plainer end to a top of 321p/kg and £2,902 in the lump.

 

Sheep numbers back on last week but trade on the lambs brisker to 358p/kg and £180 per head with the average returned at 304.88p/kg, up some 10p/kg on last week for an entry of 970.

Cull ewe numbers also less at 328, but trade again brisk to a top of £223.

 

Another good entry of calves with trade equally as dear as recently seen for a generally poorer sample in terms of quality with bulls to a top of £592

Ruth Bamford and Robert Barke of Barclays Agriculture, and members of the Agriculture team, will be setting off on a 30-mile sponsored walk over two days from Bakewell Cattle Market to Barclays Derby on Monday 22nd September to raise funds for the Royal Agriculture Benevolent Institution (RABI).

 

RABI continues to work tirelessly to uplift and support farming people through practical, financial and emotional assistance, touching the lives of thousands of people every year.

More cows and a slight uplift in trade with the average 4 pence more on the week for bigger numbers on offer.  The best cows remain over £3/kilo although there are fewer good cows on offer.  A joint top price today of 321p for a red Limousin cow from Jonothan Hall and also a heavyweight Charolais from D Thornley, Diseworth.  Better sorts generally 209p+ with again selling for feeding to an army of AFU men at ringside.

A very good entry of 1298 sheep included 970 lambs.  Demand for the lambs increased as the sale went on with a proportion of grass fed and lean lambs within the entry.  Best lightweight lambs sold to 345p/kg and heavy weight butchers lambs to 358p/kg.  Top gross of £180.18/head.  Overall average 304.88p/kg.
