Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 15th September

Another strong entry of stock in all departments with a total of 841 cattle and 1,384 sheep from 240 different vendors.

Trade in all cattle sections reported as strong with OTM’s to £3,123, finished bulls to £3,065 and clean cattle to £2,882, whilst stores to £2,520.

Finished cattle numbers respectable at 134 head and Oliver reported a similarly strong trade as recent weeks with both heifers and bulls topping at 430p/kg and steers close behind at 429p/kg.

OTM numbers again decent to total 117 and a strong level of demand for all types to a top of 334p/kg.

Store cattle continue with excellent numbers with a total of 499 and trade reported as equally as strong and possibly even dearer than last week with steers to £2,520 and heifers to £2,420.

Biggest surprise today would be the sheep trade, up some 20p/kg today on last week with the average returned at 319.73p/kg and £138/head for an entry just short of 1,000.  Ewes equally as dear as recent weeks to a top of £228.

401 Ewes and Rams

The best 20% probably a little dearer, but in fairness there were fewer very best long Texels forward this week.

Generally, the middle class goods similar to last week with plenty of with plenty of grazing purchasers operating.

A lesser portion of horned ewes forward which were possibly a little easier that the last 2 weeks.

Just a handful of tups with the better of the Texels to £176.

Ewes to £228                ave £122.29
