Bakewell Market Report Monday 29th September

A very busy day with 2,217 Sheep and 739 Cattle on offer but despite the large entries trade was very strong in all sections.

 

There were 442 Store and Breeding Cattle forward which sold on another tremondous trade with all types in great demand.

 

Steers topped at £2600 to average £1588 and heifers £2520 to average £1442.  Feeding Bulls sold to £1650 and in the breeding department Cows and Calves sold to £3700 and In Calf to Heifers £1720.

 

There were 113 Finished Cattle forward with top figure 434p/kg and £3092 per head.

The 51 heifers averaged a solid 371.8p and £2229 per head.

 

OTM cattle were out in force with a decent turnout of 112 head, trade was excellent with top prices 337p/kg and £3019 per head.  The average was a respectable 254.6p and £1671 per head.

 

A good number of calves with 78 on offer and a very strong demand, bulls sold to £685 and heifers £590.

 

In the sheep section there was the largest Monday entry for quite some time.  The 1548 lambs looked very well sold with top figures 360p/kg and £199.80 per head.  The Sqq average was 309.9p and the oversll 313.4p making a typical lamb in the 39 to 45kg weight range worth £131.75.

 

A massive entry of 668 Cull Sheep sold on a cracking trade with ewes to £241 to average £112.59

Good numbers about and some well bred and fed cattle at the top end of the entry.  Messrs Baxter, Copt Oak, Leicester had the pick today at 434, 422 and 416 with a lot of the better sorts over £4.  6 bigger made heifers topped £2800 and to £2881 for Keith Harrop.

A superb entry again this week of 666 ewes and rams with a pleasing overall average of £113.58.

 

Top call today £238 for some pure texels from Ben Thorpe with three other bunches at £230 from Boden and Davies and plenty others above the £170-£228 mark today and the top 10 pens averaging £223.40, with generally a larger proportion of stronger ewes. Trade generally fast and the grazing sheep very good to sell, however this made the mediums look less money, but they are still a good trade. Fleshy horned ewes £95+.
