Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 6th October

Another well attended market with 1,898 sheep and 808 cattle on offer from a total of 252 vendors.

Strong prices in all departments and very satisfactory results all round.

There were 520 store & breeding cattle and a good line up of buyers from far and near.

Some cattle clearly showing signs of seasonal weather, but demand good for all types and some spectacular results achieved especially for the stronger specimens.  Steers sold to £2,620 ave £1,398 and heifers peaked at £2,680 to average £1,283 with feeding bulls to £1,480 and cow and calf outfits to £3,200.

A solid trade for the 111 finished cattle with top figures 418p and £2,993 per head.

The 51 heifers averaged a useful 367.3 pence and £2,147 per head.

A few less OTM cattle forward with demand little changed and top figures 349p/kg and £2,531 per head.

The average looked good at 256.5 pence and a heft £1,738 per head.

Another big entry of 86 calves saw bulls making up to £585 with heifers to £470.

Over in the sheep sections there was an excellent turnout of 1,425 lambs, prices looked very respectable with top figures 375p/kg and £203.52 per head.

The SQQ average was 316.9p and the overall 318.3p indicating a strong demand for all meated lambs.

470 cull sheep on offer with the best ewes to £249, the overall average for a very mixed sample was a creditable £114.83.

Trade strong again with the average up by a couple of pence on the week and all the regulars working hard to secure numbers.  Top price was a superb 349p for a B Blue x heifer from Messrs Naylor, Crowdicote with a couple of pure Blond cows from Stuart Mycock selling at 340p and 330p, whether it be best meated sorts, leaner cows for feeding or plain and dairy cows, the buyers want the cows.  If you would like any information or up to date prices, give me a call on 07801 530899.

Strong money today with well fed and well bred cattle easy to place, but a lot of leaner types in the entry that were well bid for by the feeding men.  Darren & Charlie Smithem had top call at 410p with a grand fed Charolais from Messrs White at 400p (£2792).  10 Natives saw Angus to 375p, Herefords to 376p and S Horns to 366p.

The best easy to place with an army of bidders looking for quality at the right weight.  Peter Gaunt won the day with his best to 418p with others at 413 and 407p and John Kunica (Belper Skip Hire) also had a tremendous run at 416 and 410p (twice).  12 Natives had Angus to 380p and Herefords to 384p.  5 Dairy heifers also in today’s averages.

Another excellent entry of 520 with buyers operating for all sizes and qualities.

This was just as well as the sale commenced with a dispersal of Dexter cattle from the Keys of Newton Wood, Alfreton.

The 19 Dexters attracted fierce bidding with mature cows to £890, £750 and £700.

A very mixed entry but purchasers keen for all types with the very best still as dear and trade holding well to the end of the sale.

Top call strong Texels from Les Hadfield and Family at £249 with others at £230 and £213 and the best 6 pens averaging well at £208.29.

Plenty of good framed ewes £160-£178 with the better end of the horned ewes touching £120.  Better Mules £150 plus, but no real tanks in our pens today.

The rams good to sell with spirited bidding and the best good close on £200/head.
