Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 20th October

Not quite as busy as last week, but still plenty going on with 646 cattle and 1,893 sheep on offer.

This is hardly surprising as there were 4 sale days at Bakewell last week and the 6-day rule will have rendered some vendors unable to sell stock.

The entry of 320 store & breeding cattle was well received with plenty of buyers operating and trade much as we have seen it in recent weeks.  Steers sold to £2,470 to average an astonishing £1,719 evidence of the strong quality animals in the entry.

Heifers topped at £2,000 to average £1,463 with feeding bulls to £1,380.

In the breeding section cows with calves sold to £2,520 and Angus stock bulls to £2,450 both part of the special entry of Angus cattle from JC Balls from Ambergate.

There were 120 finished cattle with trade generally a shade easier. Top figures 432p and £3,187 with the average for the 50 heifers a solid 363.5p and £2,150 per head.

Less OTM cattle forward, but still a respectable show at 119.

Top figures 346p and £2,554 per head.

The average – down a bit at 239.3p and £1,490 per head possibly because of reduced quality.

Calf numbers up at 87 with a tremendous trade right through. Bulls to £690 and heifers £510.

In the sheep shed there were 1,071 lambs and a very large entry of 822 cull ewes.

Lambs sold on a solid trade with the best on offer to 369p/kg and £179.59 per head.

The SQQ settled at 302.0 pence with the overall average at 303.2p.

It is too early in the week to establish the general trend in lamb prices, only time will tell.

The 822 cull sheep stayed good right through the sale with ewes to £204 to average £101.

119 BARREN, OTM AND FEEDING COWS overall ave 239.3p/kg or £1490

(Auctioneer Oliver Hiles)

A few less on offer and the average was about 14 pence less on the week, but trade was fairly similar.  Today a lot of lean weathered cows in the entry with the long dry summer now combined with a wet weekend affected many of the entry.  Overage clean topped the entry at 346p for a 31-month-old Limmy from Redgate Farms, Brinsley with the best cow at 320p a Limousin from Austin and Shaun Mellor, Rugeley.  If you have got any cows to sell or would like an up-to-date opinion of price, give me a call on 07801 530899 and I would be happy to call on farm for a no obligation chat.

87 CALVES (Auctioneer Ivor Lowe)

Increased numbers forward and a strong trade throughout for all types.

Bulls saw B Blues to £690 and heifers to £510 and the second quality looking particularly well sold.

Angus calves in particular in keen demand today with bulls to £385 and heifers to £335 and just a small entry of B/W’s looking well sold especially for the stronger end and a top of £150.

A nice entry of the stronger B Blue, 2-month-old calves from Richard Emmott, Disley attracted significant interest with another further entry promised for next week.

Another good entry with purchasers out for all categories.

Trade a little steadier but the quality sorts still saw strong bidding with the best Texels to £204 and £190 from the Hadfield family at Chamber Farm.

Generally, less meated Mules forward with over 75% of this category leaner sorts for further feeding.  Mules to £138
