Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 27th October

Blustery weather over the weekend and a frost on Saturday morning indicates that Winter on its way.

Changing the clocks always upsets arrival times, but eventually everything arrived leaving us with a total of 770 cattle and 1,562 sheep, a very respectable entry for the time of year.

Plenty of excitement in the store & breeding section with the special entry of Pedigree Limousins from Clark Farms, Sheffield hitting the highlights at the start of the sale.

Maiden heifers topped at £3,700 and the 52 mnth stock bull attracted fierce competition resulting in a hammer price of £5,100.

The remaining store cattle sold exceedingly well with steers to £2,500 ave £1,530, heifers to £2,440 ave £1,427 and feeding bulls to £2,500 ave £1,185.

There were 115 finished cattle with trade slightly sharper.  Top figures 430p/kg and £3,280 per head.

Our regular indicator of trade being the average for the 55 heifers which managed 381.9p/kg and £2,366 per head.

Turning to the OTM department there was a decent entry of 147 head with top figures 317pkg and £3,117 per head.  The average was a shade dearer at 242.4 pence and £1,619 per head.

In the calf section, a usual number with an entry of 74.  Bulls sold to £605 and heifers to £500 so it is reasonable to assume that trade was outstanding.

In the sheep department there was a decent entry of 1,257 lambs with top figures 374p/kg and £193.70 per head.

The SQQ average was 324.9p making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg range worth £140.17 a useful increase on recent weeks.

Fewer ewes forward this week with only 305 on offer.  The best sold to £194 to average £104.08.
