Bakewell Market Report Monday 3rd November
Another excellent gathering of stock in all departments with a total of 741 cattle and 1,662 sheep on offer.
Trade reported strong in all departments with both store and finished cattle reported just as dear and in some instances possibly even dearer than recent weeks, whilst the sheep trade was up another gear on last week.
Store cattle numbers very respectable for the time of year with a total of 416 on offer.
Just a small entry of breeding cattle, but plenty of interest with a top of £2660 whilst steers peaked at £2300 to return an overall average of £1600 per head, heifers peaked at £2200 and bulls to £1740.
Over in Oliver’s department trade strong for all types with heifers to 441p/kg and £2947 per head and steers to 430p/kg and £2392 whilst bulls peaked at 439p/kg and £3120.
Finished cattle totalled 130 whilst OTM numbers strong for the time of year at 136 head with all rewarded with a solid trade to gross a top of £2603.
59 calves possibly dearer than last week with bulls to £700 and heifers to £540.
Sheep trade very rewarding for a strong entry including 1185 finished lambs and 470 ewes.
Lamb trade up another gear on last week’s excellent result to return an average of 330.67p/kg and £141.70 overall with ewes a flier to average £129 and a top of £257.

Exactly the same average as last week but with a higher percentage of dairy cows in the entry the cows will be dearer on the week. Only a couple of best cows over 300 pence today to a top of 302 pence or £2603 for a lovely Simmental (6yrs) from Lorraine Renshaw of Ashbourne with the best end of the cows generally 280p+. Certainly dearer for the bulls this week with the top definitely more money. Keith Harrop top of the pops this week at 439p (2923) with suckler bred sorts from the Wells family and Jonothan Salisbury both looking good. 9 dairy bulls today topped at 328p for a heavyweight Friesian to gross to £2276.

A better entry and more meat about with several runs of corn fed ewes from various vendors and generally a better quality show compared to last week.
Trade has pushed on and plenty of continental types £220 plus with very best long and heavy with Texel heads £240 plus.
Top call for Jill & Andrew Gagie at £257 for strong Texels with others in the same pen at £248.
The best 10 pens averaged an excellent £229.30.
If anything, Mules have not moved on as fast as the best Texels with the biggest pen in the £144-£148 region
A strong contingent of horned types today with better types over £104/head.
Several grazing purchasers operating with punters for all breeds and styles.
In the rams a time of year when anything can appear with some meated and the others worked and lean. Better meated sorts £140 plus up to £204 for Mark Hambletons Texel.
