Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Another excellent gathering of stock in all departments with a total of 741 cattle and 1,662 sheep on offer.

Trade reported strong in all departments with both store and finished cattle reported just as dear and in some instances possibly even dearer than recent weeks, whilst the sheep trade was up another gear on last week.

Store cattle numbers very respectable for the time of year with a total of 416 on offer.

Just a small entry of breeding cattle, but plenty of interest with a top of £2660 whilst steers peaked at £2300 to return an overall average of £1600 per head, heifers peaked at £2200 and bulls to £1740.

Over in Oliver’s department trade strong for all types with heifers to 441p/kg and £2947 per head and steers to 430p/kg and £2392 whilst bulls peaked at 439p/kg and £3120.

Finished cattle totalled 130 whilst OTM numbers strong for the time of year at 136 head with all rewarded with a solid trade to gross a top of £2603.

59 calves possibly dearer than last week with bulls to £700 and heifers to £540.

Sheep trade very rewarding for a strong entry including 1185 finished lambs and 470 ewes.

Lamb trade up another gear on last week’s excellent result to return an average of 330.67p/kg and £141.70 overall with ewes a flier to average £129 and a top of £257.

Exactly the same average as last week but with a higher percentage of dairy cows in the entry the cows will be dearer on the week.  Only a couple of best cows over 300 pence today to a top of 302 pence or £2603 for a lovely Simmental (6yrs) from Lorraine Renshaw of Ashbourne with the best end of the cows generally 280p+.  Bakewell can deal with the numbers and has the trade to prove it with the best way to market your cows is on their legs in Bakewell.

Dear last week and equally the same today with a full line up of wholesalers and butchers all looking to get fridges full before Christmas.

33 Young Bulls ave 349.8p/kg

Certainly dearer for the bulls this week with the top definitely more money.  Keith Harrop top of the pops this week at 439p (2923) with suckler bred sorts from the Wells family and Jonothan Salisbury both looking good.  9 dairy bulls today topped at 328p for a heavyweight Friesian to gross to £2276.

Some stronger, better sorts about and a solid average for all comers.  Best and suckler sold to 430p for Joe & Jane Gibbs, Hartington with Philip Hooley at 420p and Alan Dickinson at 416p.  14 natives saw Angus to 388p and Lincoln Reds to 379p.

A better average with an army of butchers competing hard today with the best end better sold.  Philip Hooley sold his best to 441p/kg with Don Lownds at 439p and Louise Wainwright at 438p, all the best over £4/kilo.

12 Natives had Angus to 380p and Herefords to 372p.

Another good entry with 416 sold on another very strong trade for all qualities.

Breeders topped at £2260 for a stylish Beef Shorthorn cow with a Limousin steer calf at foot from the Birch family of Baslow.

Feeding Bulls

A smaller entry of bulls topped at £1740 for a 12 month old Limousin from Messrs Whittaker, Marple Bridge.

A larger entry of steers were a fast trade topping at £2300 3 times over.

Less numbers on offer but a strong trade throughout for all types.

Bulls saw B Blues to £650 and heifers to £490, the second quality looking well sold.

The reared calves topped at £700 for a B Blue from Springfield Farm for a B Blue, 5 mnths, a Shorthorn heifer, 8 mnths topped at £540 from T Farrington & Sons.

A similar entry of 1655 included 1185 lambs.  Demand very brisk for all types with best butchers lambs peaking at 386p/kg with heavy butchers lambs to 355p/kg and an outstanding pen of over weight lambs, first to be offered for sale sold at 360p/kg and grossed almost £190.

Four pens sold at 370p/kg and above.

Overall average 330.67p/kg.

A better entry and more meat about with several runs of corn fed ewes from various vendors and generally a better quality show compared to last week.

Trade has pushed on and plenty of continental types £220 plus with very best long and heavy with Texel heads £240 plus.

Top call for Jill & Andrew Gagie at £257 for strong Texels with others in the same pen at £248.

The best 10 pens averaged an excellent £229.30.

If anything, Mules have not moved on as fast as the best Texels with the biggest pen in the £144-£148 region

A strong contingent of horned types today with better types over £104/head.

Several grazing purchasers operating with punters for all breeds and styles.

In the rams a time of year when anything can appear with some meated and the others worked and lean.  Better meated sorts £140 plus up to £204 for Mark Hambletons Texel.
