Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 10th November

Good entries of stock forward from no fewer than 272 vendors.

There were 853 cattle and 2,052 sheep on offer with a solid trade in all departments.

Many customers took advantage of the farmers MOT Day and went home with test results for blood pressure, heart rate, cholesterol levels and blood sugar reports.

The various health staff and charity representatives did a great job, for which we are all very grateful.

Those with a few advisories can call at the drop-in clinic any Monday for a re-test.

Store cattle numbers were good for the time of year.

Buyers were out in force from far and wide and trade remains very firm, steers sold to £2,500 ave £1,595, heifers to £2,520 ave £1,455 and feeding bulls to £1,980 ave £1,434.

Just a few breeding cattle with cows & calves to £2,000 and a 5-year-old Lim stock bull at £3,400.

Don’t forget the special entry of in calf heifers next Monday.

The entry of 192 finished cattle was exceptional with top figures 462p and £3,618, the average for the 83 heifers was 396.5p/kg and £2,446 per head.

118 OTM and feeding cows this week with trade remaining good.

Top figures 342p and £3,298 per head, the averages looked very respectable at 254.8p/kilo and £1,640 per head.

A good turnout of sheep with 2,052 on offer.

Trade for the 1,501 lambs was not as good as last week with top figures 380p/kg and £178.97.

The SQQ average was 320.7p/kg, but it was too early to say whether this will prove to be a good trade on the week.

A typical lamb in the 39-45kg weight bracket came to £137.61.

537 cull sheep on offer with trade firmer.  Ewes sold to £232 to average £128.10 and the 19 cast rams sold to £255 to average £178.74.
