Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 17th November

Another busy day at Bakewell with numbers swelled by special entries in the breeding cattle department.

The changes in the weather with floods at the weekend and now frost.  All comes as rather a shock as we have forgotten what cold feels like, but rather more seasonal with Christmas 6 weeks away.

The store & breeding cattle section was a hive of activity with 79 breeding cattle and 375 stores forward a sample that included the annual consignment of in calf heifers from the Ede Family at Youlgreave.

The 40 Limousin & B Blue x heifers sold to £3,080 to average £2,277.

Steers reached £2,560 ave £1,516 and heifers £2,300 ave £1,310.

Feeding bulls sold to £1,980 ave £1,042.

The above prices indicating that feeding cattle are clearly in short supply.

Only 129 finished cattle this week with a considerable reduction in numbers from last week.  Trade solid with top figures 453p/kg and £3,361 per head.

The 65 heifers averaged a very respectable 387.7 pence and £2,348 per head.

The OTM section seemed quiet to start with, but a total of 150 head eventually arrived as farmers offload before Winter.

Trade little changed with averages 240.4 pence and £1,573 per head.

Top figures looking good at 323p and £3,070 per head.

A decent number of calves forward with 64 on offer, trade holding up well with bulls to £620 and heifers £535.

Over in the sheep shed things were quieter than last week with a total of 1,534 sheep on offer.

The 1,100 lambs looked well sold with top figures 370p/kg and £192.78 per head.

The SQQ was 325.1 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £138.97.

Cull sheep numbers at 434 with ewes to £246 ave £126.18.
