Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 24th November

The stock keeps coming with numbers very similar to last week, plenty of buyers on parade and a decent trade in all sections.

Store & breeding cattle out in force with 433 head on offer.  Concerns about feed supplies and imported beef do not seem to have dented demand with plenty of highlights throughout the sale.

Steers sold to £2,500 ave £1,498, heifers to £2,400 ave £1,347 and feeding bulls to £2,050 ave £1,147.

What the figures do not show was the fantastic trade for suckled calves at the start of the sale.

In the breeding department a Lim stock bull topped the sale at £4,900, Cows in calf hit £2,750 and cows & Calves to £2,300.

Finished cattle numbers holding up with 138 in total, top figures 438p and £3,663 per head.

Our regular guide to the level of prices the heifer average showed 52 animals averaging 378.4p and £2,320 per head.

61 calves this week with bulls to a tremendous £720 and heifers to £460.

In the sheep department trade was up for all commodities.

The 1,157 lambs sold on a sharper trade with top figures 393p/kg and £186.60 per head.

The SQQ average looked good at 332.4 pence making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £143.18.

In the cull sheep section, there was a decent entry of 424 head with ewes to £302 to average £145.89, well up on last week.

10 Rams today averaging £195.90 right through and reflecting the quality, being largely strong, long texel types, with a top call of £218 from Little Onn.
