Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 5th January

A snowy morning and with temperatures down to -8 it did not deter farmers from bringing stock to market and we ended up with 424 cattle and 1,670 sheep.

By the time buyers were on the road travelling conditions were a little easier and most regulars were on parade.

The store & breeding section was a bit light on numbers with only 153 head on offer, but quality was good and trade very strong.

Steers reached £2,300 with a fantastic average of £1,698 a tribute to the quality of the offering.

Heifers made up to £2,300 to average a very satisfactory £1,531.  In the feeding bulls section, the top price was £2,000 to average £1,238.

Only one cow and a calf – a ped Sim with a 3 week old calf that sold at £2,250.

Finished cattle were out in force with 124 in total.  Top figures 458p/kg and £3,282 per head.

The average for the 51 heifers was a solid 386.6 pence and £2,466 per head.

A good show of 108 OTM cattle saw top figures of 330p and £2,914 per head.

The average was a considerable increase on recent weeks with 243.8 pence and £1,537 per head.

A cold day for calves with only 39 on offer but trade clearly hot with bulls to £770 and heifers £680.

The sheep section was well supported with 1,670 in total.

The 1,413 hoggs looked well sold with top figures of 380p/kg and £204.40 per head.

The SQQ average was 330p/kg making a typical lamb in the 39-45kg bracket worth £142.52.

Not a bad turn out of 257 cull sheep with ewes to £240 to average £139.20.
