Livestock & Dairy: Bakewell Market

Bakewell Market Report Monday 9th February

Decent entries in all departments with 676 cattle and 1,628 sheep on offer and a strong trade prevailing throughout.

Store cattle numbers were less than the equivalent market last year with quality short finish animals in short supply.

If you have store and breeding cattle ready for sale, do not hesitate, Bakewell buyers would like the opportunity to bid at them.

Steers sold to £2,560 ave £1,606, heifers to £2,200 ave £1,337 and feeding bulls to £1,950 ave £1,029.

Trade was fantastic from start to finish and buyers were operating at all price levels.  See if you can find some for next week.

In the breeding section 2 pedigree Simmental stock bulls both about 18 months old sold at £4,300 and £3,800.  And whilst supplies of store cattle were limited the finished ring was particularly busy with 178 head in total.

Trade was solid with the top figures 453p/kg and £4,019 per head.

The OTM ring was also well supported with 146 on offer.  Top figures 384p/kg and £3,200 per head.

The overall average indicating the general level of trade was a very healthy 257.8 pence.

Just 36 calves this week with a lack of supply driving demand, bulls reached £645 and £515.

In the sheep shed there was a good turnout of 1,628.

An impressive number bearing in mind the miserable weather over the last few days making sheep sorting a particularly unwelcome activity.

There were 1,324 hoggs in total with top figures 408p/kg and £121.90 per head.

The SQQ average looked very good at 351.1 pence making a typical hogg in the 39-45kg range worth £149.53.

A smallish entry of 278 cull sheep saw trade much stronger than in recent weeks with ewes to £272 to average £148.20

STORE & BREEDING CATTLE – (Auctioneers Alastair Sneddon & Meg Elliott)

A respectable entry of 316, but we could certainly have sold a lot more, had they been available.

Do give Alastair Sneddon a call on 07973 982441 if you need advice on any aspect of the store & breeding cattle section.

Just a reminder to all to ensure that you book in before 12 noon on Friday.  We have had one or two vendors ‘miss the advertising boat’ in recent weeks and whilst their stock sold well on the day it is so much better for prospective buyers to see them on the list.

The early warning list works really well, please help us to keep it that way.

The sale started with breeding cattle which included 2 pedigree Simmental stock bulls from 2 different vendors, the results being:
